A texture background suggests the look and feel of a surface—paper, wood, stone, fabric, paint, or another material—without changing the screen itself. Choose one that supports the subject rather than competing with it; the right choice depends on whether you need a digital design asset, a repeating pattern, or a physical photography backdrop.
What is a texture background?
Texture is the look and feel of a surface, as the National Gallery of Art puts it in its educational guide to texture. In a digital background, the surface is represented visually: an image can suggest rough paper or polished stone, but it does not make a screen physically rough. In a printed design, texture can also be tactile—for example, embossed lettering or thick paper.
Adobe Express distinguishes image texture, made from organic or geometric visual elements, from pattern texture, which uses more structured, repeated elements. Artists can also create tactile effects with brush marks, layers, tools, and added materials. These distinctions matter when choosing an asset: a photograph of weathered plaster, a regular geometric repeat, and embossed paper are all forms of texture, but they work differently.

Common texture background styles
Stock libraries group textures by the surfaces or effects people search for. Useful starting terms include paper, wood, wall, concrete, metal, fabric, stone, canvas, water, paint, grunge, marble, brick, leather, glass, sand, grain, watercolor, and noise. Adobe Stock lists these and related categories on its texture search page.
- Natural and crafted: wood grain, paper, canvas, fabric, leather, grass, and stone.
- Architectural and industrial: concrete, brick, wall, metal, and glass.
- Decorative or expressive: paint, watercolor, grunge, noise, smoke, and grain.
Use descriptive searches rather than the broad word “texture” alone. Phrases such as “paper texture background,” “seamless wood texture,” “subtle stone background,” or “concrete texture” are more likely to surface the kind of asset you mean. If the background needs to cover a large area without visible seams, include “seamless” or “repeating” in the search.

How to choose a texture that supports your subject
Begin with the foreground—text, artwork, or product—and the mood you want to suggest. Wood grain can be a useful starting point for artisanal or natural goods; marble or stone may suggest luxury or permanence; concrete can suit a modern, urban look. These are visual conventions, not guarantees about how an audience will respond.
- Keep prominence in check. Subtle variation usually lets a product or text lead. Bold contrast, busy marks, or strong patterning can pull attention away.
- Match the scale. A grain or repeat should feel proportionate to the subject. Oversized marks may overwhelm small content; very fine detail can disappear at small display sizes.
- Check color and contrast. A neutral, light-to-medium texture can be easier to reuse, but make sure foreground elements remain distinct and readable.
- Use enough resolution. Choose an image sharp enough for the final display or print dimensions; enlarging a small file can make its detail look soft or pixelated.
- Inspect repeats. For a tiled background, look closely at the edges and joins. An uneven repeat can create visible bands or seams across a large area.
- Match the workflow and permissions. Decide whether you need an editable design-tool element, a licensed stock file, your own scan or photograph, or a physical set. Check the provider’s current terms for your intended use.
Ways to find or make a digital texture
Browse a stock library
Adobe Stock organizes texture photographs and illustrations as searchable asset categories. Its guidance describes previewing watermarked versions in comps and licensing non-watermarked files for use. Inventory, licensing terms, and available plans can change, so check the provider’s current information before using an asset.

Use a design-tool library
Canva describes searching its image library for textures to use as backgrounds or design elements. It also supports a make-your-own route: photograph or scan a surface, then upload it to a design. A library result or uploaded image is not automatically cleared for every use; review the current terms that apply to the asset and your project.
Scan or photograph a surface
A self-made texture can give a design a specific character. Photograph or scan the material evenly, watch for shadows or glare that distract from the surface, and check that the resulting file is large enough for the final layout. A painted sheet, paper, fabric, or wall can all provide source detail, whether you use the image as-is or crop it into a background.

When a physical photography background makes more sense
A product photographer may need a real surface in the shooting setup rather than a downloadable background image. Adobe’s product-photography guidance includes seamless paper, custom sets, and digital backgrounds as distinct options. Seamless paper is a physical photography backdrop; it is not a substitute for a digital texture file when the goal is a graphic design background.
Choose between a physical set and a digital background based on the shoot and the intended result. A physical surface is present when the photograph is made; a digital background is incorporated in the design or image-editing workflow. In either case, keep texture subordinate to the product and select a scale, color, and resolution appropriate to the final image.
