The Ramadan crescent, or hilal, is the young visible Moon associated with the start of Ramadan. The Moon’s phase provides a calendar marker, but seeing the crescent and declaring the month begun are not the same thing: religious authorities determine which observations and calculations count for their communities. Because visibility varies by place and procedures differ, Ramadan can begin on different dates in different communities.
What is the Ramadan crescent?
The hilal is the young crescent Moon associated with the beginning of an Islamic lunar month. Its appearance is relevant to the lunar calendar, but the astronomical event, a possible sighting, and an official declaration are separate stages. A new Moon may have occurred without a visible crescent; a crescent may be judged potentially visible without a community’s authority having declared Ramadan; and the declaration follows the procedure that authority recognizes. Islamic Relief UK explains the crescent’s role in the Islamic calendar.
How is the first day of Ramadan determined?
There is no single procedure that applies to every Muslim community. Authorities may consider reports of observation, astronomical calculations, or both, and they decide how those inputs are used.

What calculation can establish
Astronomers can calculate when conjunction occurs, how long the Moon remains above the horizon after sunset, and whether visibility is possible. Jordan’s General Iftaa’ Department says astronomers present such findings to its Board; calculations inform the decision but are not identical to the religious determination. Jordan’s statement on sighting new moons describes the process.
How authorities may treat sightings
Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta describes a procedure involving local sighting and discusses a case in which a country follows a nearby Muslim country. Its 1 August 2013 answer also says to complete thirty days when the crescent is not sighted on the twenty-ninth day. These are Dar Al-Ifta’s attributed guidance, not a universal ruling. Read Dar Al-Ifta’s answer on sighting the crescents of Ramadan.

Why can Ramadan start on different days?
Two factors can lead communities to different announcements: the crescent’s visibility varies by location, and authorities may use different procedures or be followed by different communities. When comparing announcements, check which authority made the decision, whether it relies on local observation or may follow another jurisdiction, how it treats calculated visibility, and the location and date covered by any forecast. Available official examples document particular approaches, not a complete survey of global practice.
For a dated example, Jordan’s Board determined that Thursday, 19 February 2026, would be the first day of Ramadan 1447 AH in Jordan. Its resolution says the committee’s findings were harmonious with astronomical calculations. This was Jordan’s local decision, not a worldwide date. See Jordan’s Resolution No. 330, dated 17 February 2026 and added 23 February 2026.

Forecasts describe visibility, not a religious declaration
The UK Government’s February 2026 visibility summary concerned that lunation, not a later year’s forecast. It said optical aid might be required in some regions on 18 February. Such guidance describes observing conditions; it does not itself decide whether Ramadan has begun. Read the UK Government’s February 2026 visibility summary.
Can you see the Ramadan crescent with binoculars?
Binoculars can be an optional aid for observing a young crescent, and optical assistance may matter under some visibility conditions. They are not needed everywhere, and the available evidence does not establish that every religious authority accepts an optically assisted observation for its decision. A viewing aid can help you look; it does not determine the start of Ramadan. Follow the relevant authority’s announcement for your community.
