Indonesia’s national flag, called Sang Merah Putih (“the Red and White”), is a rectangle with two equal horizontal bands: red on top and white below. Article 35 of Indonesia’s Constitution identifies it as “Bendera Negara Indonesia ialah Sang Merah Putih.”
What does the Indonesian flag look like?
The design consists of two equal horizontal fields, with red above white. The name Sang Merah Putih means “the Red and White.” Indonesia’s Constitution gives the flag that name in Article 35: “Bendera Negara Indonesia ialah Sang Merah Putih” (“The national flag of Indonesia is the Red and White”).
What are the proportions of the Indonesian flag?
The 1958 regulation text describes the flag’s width as two-thirds of its length, equivalent to a length-to-width ratio of 3:2. That ratio describes its proportions, not a single mandatory size for every flag. In a 2016 report, Indonesia’s Cabinet Secretariat said flags distributed by the Presidential Secretariat measured 200 cm by 300 cm; those dimensions refer to that distribution, not to all Indonesian flags or displays. The Secretariat’s report on the 2016 distribution summarizes the design, while the official legislative database records the 1958 regulation as in force: PP No. 40 Tahun 1958. The ratio wording appears in a transcription of that regulation at Peraturan.info.
What do the red and white colors mean?
A cultural explanation commonly associates red with bravery and white with purity. The Directorate of Cultural Protection, part of Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture, presents this interpretation in its account of the flag. It is a cultural explanation, not wording in Constitution Article 35, which identifies the flag but does not assign meanings to its colors. The directorate also notes that red and white appear in earlier Indonesian cultural traditions, including a nine-stripe design associated with Majapahit. What role did the flag play in Indonesia’s independence proclamation?
The Directorate of Cultural Protection reports that the flag was raised at the independence proclamation on 17 August 1945 at Jalan Pegangsaan Timur 56 in Jakarta. Its account names Latief Hendraningrat and Suhud as the people who raised it, and Fatmawati as the maker of the historic flag.

What happened to the historic flag afterward?
The same directorate’s account says the flag moved with the republican leadership to Yogyakarta in 1946. During the Dutch attack on Yogyakarta in 1948, it was disassembled and concealed; in 1949 it was reassembled and returned to Soekarno. The account says it was flown again in Yogyakarta on 17 August 1949. These custody details are the directorate’s historical account.
