On 17 August 2026, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Media reported that the 2027 auspicious-times schedule had been prepared by a re-established committee of 19 astrologers. Anyone planning a ritual around an exact time should consult the current government-issued schedule rather than infer a time from the usual celebration dates.
What are the traditions of Avurudu?
Preparing the home and observing the transition
Household preparations can include cleaning the home and, in some accounts, a final bath or herbal anointing. Nonagathaya, often described as a neutral period between the old and new years, is associated with pausing ordinary work and commercial activity and turning toward religious or communal observance. Its exact timing should be checked against that year’s calendar rather than treated as a fixed duration.

- Ask before taking photographs: get permission before photographing private household rituals.
- Distinguish public events from family observances: community games and gatherings can offer a public way to experience the season, while household rituals are best approached through an invitation.
