The robot in Can’t Help Myself is not documented as conscious, dying, or trying to save itself. It is a programmed industrial machine repeatedly sweeping red liquid back inside a boundary. The sadness many viewers feel comes from what that visible task can suggest: endless work, limited control, and apparent vulnerability. The Guggenheim frames the installation more broadly around automation, territory, and the changing relationship between people and machines.
What is Can’t Help Myself?
Can’t Help Myself is a site-specific installation by Chinese artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, created for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s Tales of Our Time exhibition. The exhibition ran from November 4, 2016, to March 10, 2017, according to the Guggenheim’s exhibition audio page.
At its center is a modified KUKA industrial robot inside a polycarbonate enclosure. Ceiling-mounted visual-recognition sensors detect when red liquid crosses an invisible boundary, and the robot sweeps the material back inward. The task repeats; after completing it, the programmed sequence may include one of 32 movements modeled on human or animal actions. The Guggenheim describes the work as a way to consider “our increasingly automated global reality, one in which territories are controlled mechanically and the relationship between people and technology is rapidly changing.”

Why does the machine seem sad?
The installation makes a mechanical task legible in human terms. The robot keeps working, the boundary keeps defining what counts as “inside,” and the red liquid spreads again. That combination can look like futile labor: the machine appears unable to finish, rest, or choose another task. Its gestures can also read as signs of fatigue or distress, even though they are programmed movements rather than evidence of feelings.

- EASY TO USE: No assembly or complicated setup is needed. Children can simply choose a drawing card, insert it into the robot’s head, press the drawing button, and watch the robot start drawing. The easy card-in design helps kids understand the activity quickly, making creative play more independent, less frustrating, and easier for parents to set up.
- PERFECT GIFT FOR KIDS: This drawing robot set includes 200 drawing cards, 12 colorful markers, 4 black drawing pens, 1 reusable drawing board, and 1 Type-C charging cable. Kids can easily start their creative play right away. It makes a great birthday, Christmas, or holiday gift for children ages 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 years old.
The setting intensifies that impression. The machine works within an enclosure, while its sweeping is governed by sensors and software. Viewers may see a trapped or vulnerable figure in that arrangement. The sadness is a response to the scene and its humanlike implications—not proof that the robot experiences suffering or that the artists supplied a story about a dying machine.
What does the artwork mean?
Automation and control
The Guggenheim’s central framing is about systems that manage territory and behavior mechanically. The invisible perimeter turns the floor into a controlled zone; the robot’s job is to restore that boundary whenever the liquid crosses it. The machine is both an agent carrying out the task and an object constrained by the rules humans have set.

Human and machine vulnerability
The museum invites viewers to ask: “Who is more vulnerable: the human who built the machine or the machine who is controlled by a human?” That is an open question, not a conclusion that one side is definitively more vulnerable. The installation makes the relationship feel entangled: people design and direct machines, while increasingly automated systems also shape how people live and work.
Why viewers project a human story onto it
Repetition, enclosure, red liquid, and expressive-looking movement encourage empathy. The title can add to the impression that the machine is struggling to cope. Read together, these details can evoke exhaustion, obligation, or lack of control—familiar human experiences—without establishing that the robot is aware of its task. Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, quoted in the Guggenheim’s teaching material, describe an “endless interplay of entanglement and containment between human and machine,” in which each takes advantage of and progresses with the other.

What is the red liquid?
The liquid is not established as blood or leaking hydraulic fluid. The Guggenheim’s technical identity report identifies the medium as cellulose ether in colored water. It lists the installation’s materials as a KUKA industrial robot, stainless steel and rubber, cellulose ether in colored water, a lighting grid with Cognex visual-recognition sensors, and a polycarbonate wall with an aluminum frame.

Artnet reported a wave of TikTok video memes about the installation, with some clips receiving millions of views. Its January 2022 report linked the renewed attention to a software engineer’s November 2021 Facebook post describing a strong emotional response to the work. This explains a past burst of circulation; it does not establish a current trend or a precise total view count.

The clips’ emotional appeal is understandable: a machine designed to keep a boundary intact can look like a worker caught in an unending shift. That reading connects with the Guggenheim’s questions about control and vulnerability, while remaining one interpretation among several. The work does not need a literal robot-in-distress plot to make that response meaningful.
