Adobe Stock: free Photoshop templates
Adobe Stock’s Free Photoshop Templates Collection is the most direct official starting point for editable Photoshop layouts. The live collection displayed 100 results when reviewed; this is a changing catalog count, not a promise that the same files or total will remain available. Adobe’s broader free stock collection is a separate entry point for free assets. Check the individual listing rather than assuming that every template surfaced in Photoshop is free.
Adobe Help explains that templates can be previewed before licensing. After licensing, the template can be opened and edited in Photoshop like a Photoshop document. Adobe’s template and preset instructions describe this workflow; the action of licensing is part of it, so previewing and downloading should not be treated as synonymous with a free license.
PSDCovers: mockups
PSDCovers offers free and premium mockups. Mockups are useful for showing artwork or a design in a depicted setting, such as on a product, rather than serving as a blank layout or an image effect. Its commercial-use terms allow use in personal and commercial projects but prohibit hosting, reselling, redistributing, or sublicensing the downloaded files. Read the provider’s current terms and any item-level requirements before use.

What “PSD” and “Photoshop template” mean
A PSD is Photoshop’s familiar layered document format, but not every Photoshop template uses the .psd extension. Adobe says Photoshop templates use the .psdt extension and open as instances of PSD documents. Adobe’s Photoshop documentation also notes that, once opened, a template can be worked on like any other Photoshop document (.psd). In practice, confirm the listed format and whether layers or other elements are editable before choosing a file.
Free downloads can include different kinds of design resources: layouts, collages, image effects, and mockups. They do not all serve the same purpose. A layout gives you a structure to customize; an effect changes the look of an image; a mockup presents a design in context. Adobe’s Photoshop templates page shows examples of customizable templates, but check the individual listing for its included assets, dimensions, and editing details.

How to choose and download the right file
- Pick the kind of asset you need. Choose a template for a customizable layout, a mockup to present artwork in context, or an effect or collage for a specific image treatment.
- Open the individual item page. Verify that the file is currently available, whether it is free or requires licensing or payment, and what format and contents are included.
- Preview before committing. For Adobe Stock templates, Adobe documents previewing before licensing. Review the preview and the item’s details to confirm it suits your project.
- Read the license for that provider and item. Confirm personal or commercial-use rights, attribution requirements if any, and restrictions on sharing or redistribution. Do not assume one site’s terms apply to files from another.
- Download and open in Photoshop. Adobe says a licensed template can be opened and edited like a Photoshop document; check whether the particular file is .psdt or .psd and follow the provider’s download instructions.
What “free” does—and does not—promise
Free describes a price or collection designation, not universal permission to reuse or distribute a file. Adobe describes its own free assets and licensing standards on its free collection page, while its Photoshop template workflow includes licensing the chosen template. For third-party files, the provider’s own terms govern. For example, PSDCovers permits use in personal and commercial projects under its stated terms but bars redistribution or sublicensing of the downloaded file. Permission to use a mockup in a finished project is not permission to republish the source file itself.
Is the “40+” list still available?
The exact older list suggested by “40+ Fresh & Free High Quality PSD Files For Download” could not be tied to a publisher or fixed inventory in the available sources. Adobe Stock’s current collection is a useful alternative, but it should not be presented as the same list. Treat current catalogs as live collections and verify individual files and terms at the time you download them.
