For denim patches with a textile backing, Aleene’s recommends its Permanent Fabric Glue. Aleene’s also says Fabric Fusion works for denim repairs, though it may leave the fabric feeling stiffer. Test the glue on a hidden area first, and follow the directions and laundry timing for the exact product you use.
Which fabric glue should you use on denim?
Choose according to the repair and the patch. Aleene’s FAQ recommends Permanent Fabric Glue for patches with textile backings and says Fabric Fusion also works for denim repair. The company notes that Fabric Fusion can leave denim with a stiffer hand, so test a small, inconspicuous area for feel and soak-through before applying it where the repair will show. Aleene’s FAQ

- Prewash the jeans. Wash the garment without fabric softener, then let the repair area dry.
- Test first. Apply a little glue to a hidden spot and check the result for stiffness, soak-through, and appearance.
- Apply an even coat. Spread Fabric Fusion evenly over the patch or fabric as directed on the product.
- Press the patch in place. Align it carefully, then press it against the denim.
- Keep it secured while setting. Use tape or pins if needed to hold the material in position.
- Allow the stated setting time. Aleene’s product page says to allow 2–4 hours to fully cure. It says the repair is washable after 48 hours.
- Wash gently. Turn the jeans inside out, use a gentle cycle, and dry at low temperature.

When can you wash glued jeans?
Use the timing for the adhesive you actually bought. Aleene’s Fabric Fusion product page says washable after 48 hours. Separately, Aleene’s FAQ gives a general recommendation to wait at least 72 hours before laundering when using fabric glues. Those are distinct instructions: the FAQ’s general advice does not replace a product-specific label, and cure and wash times can vary by formula. Can fabric glue survive dry cleaning?
Do not assume permanent fabric glue is dry-clean safe. Aleene’s says that, in its product line, only Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion is dry cleanable; it warns that dry-cleaning chemicals may weaken or dissolve most other glues. Its FAQ also distinguishes water-based and solvent-based products and advises testing. If the jeans need dry cleaning, check the exact adhesive’s label and the cleaner’s guidance before using glue. When glue may not be enough
A patch bonded with glue is an option for appropriate repairs, but the available manufacturer guidance does not establish how well glue alone holds up in every location or under repeated wear. For a repair at a high-stress crotch, inner thigh, or seam—or where failure would leave a larger tear—consider sewn reinforcement or a professional denim repair rather than relying on glue alone.
