To make a floral Derby hat, start with a fitted hat, fascinator, or headband, then choose fresh, faux, or handmade flowers to suit the base. Arrange the focal pieces before attaching them, build from larger elements to smaller accents, and keep the finished headpiece light enough to wear comfortably.
Choose a base and flower style
A wide-brim straw hat gives you room for a crown cluster, brim trim, or dramatic focal flower. A fascinator or comb makes a smaller accent; a headband is a convenient base for a lightweight paper bloom. Try on the undecorated base first so you can check the fit and see how much decoration its scale can carry. Kentucky Monthly recommends a good-quality straw hat as one option, while the official Kentucky Derby attire guidance suggests lightweight straw or pastel fabrics for a floral look.
Choose flowers according to the look and attachment approach: fresh roses, artificial blooms, daisies on floral wire, or handmade tissue-paper flowers are distinct options, not interchangeable methods for every base. Fresh flowers can bring a natural centerpiece, while faux flowers are useful for arranging a lasting cluster. A paper bloom is especially suited to a lightweight headband.

1. Red roses and black tulle
Make a lightweight tulle pouf on a wide-brim hat and arrange red roses and foliage at its center. The 1-800-Flowers tutorial uses short-cut fresh roses attached with hot glue and advises keeping the decorations light. Follow the tutorial’s method for fresh flowers rather than assuming hot glue suits every flower or hat material.

2. Daisy crown around the brim
Thread daisies onto floral wire and fasten the wire around the crown or brim area. Adjust the spacing to the hat’s size: a small base may call for a close, compact line, while a larger brim can carry more open spacing.
3. Faux-flower crown cluster
Arrange several artificial blooms around the crown or gather them to one side of a straw hat. Try different placements before attaching them; a 2026 WJHG demonstration uses fake flower bundles, and Kentucky Monthly likewise advises planning the layout before gluing.

4. One oversized bloom with ribbon
Let a single large flower do most of the visual work, then add ribbon as a complementary detail. Kentucky Monthly suggests a bold, oversized flower with feathers or ribbons for a dramatic effect; keeping the accents restrained helps the focal bloom remain clear.
5. Feather-and-flower side sweep
Place the largest flowers first along one side of the hat, then add feather accents to extend the arrangement. This layered design combines Kentucky Monthly’s advice to position large elements first with creator tutorials featuring flowers, feathers, and embellishments.

Start with a lightweight straw hat and add pastel flowers in an airy arrangement. The official Kentucky Derby attire page recommends lightweight straw or pastel fabrics for a floral-and-feather look. A modest cluster or a few blooms can suit this style better than a heavy, densely layered centerpiece.

Set the hat on the wearer and test the layout before attaching anything. Move the largest pieces until the balance and scale feel right, then fill gaps with smaller details. Fiona Young Brown, writing in Kentucky Monthly, attributes this advice to Dee’s Crafts owner Kathy Olliges: “Play around with ideas and decide where to place each item before you begin gluing.”
- Check the fit. Try on the base and confirm that its size and position work for the wearer.
- Lay out the design. Place flowers, foliage, tulle, ribbon, netting, feathers, or sparkle without attaching them so you can adjust the composition.
- Attach the main elements first. Secure the larger focal pieces before adding small finishing accents. Use glue sparingly to avoid seepage.
- Choose an attachment method for the materials. The fresh-rose tutorial uses hot glue; Kentucky Monthly recommends craft glue in its advice. The cited guidance does not compare bond strength across materials, so select an approach suited to your chosen base and decoration rather than treating either adhesive as universal.
- Check comfort and weight. Try the finished headpiece on and remove or reposition anything that makes it uncomfortable to wear.
Match the design to the occasion
A full-size hat offers more room for a crown cluster, brim treatment, or large focal flower. A comb fascinator or headband keeps the design smaller, while a tissue-paper flower provides a lightweight handmade accent. For an event-day choice, the official Kentucky Derby guidance advises considering comfort over a full day; an airy design can be a better fit than a heavily loaded one.
