Krita’s 5.3 and 6.0 beta period is over: the project released both versions on 24 March 2026, and its release history lists 5.3.4 and 6.0.4, dated 15 September 2026. The shared feature work brings a rebuilt text system and a broad set of painting, vector, and workflow updates. The key distinction is that 5.3 is built on Qt5, while 6.0 uses Qt6 and adds Linux native-Wayland color-management functionality.
What happened to the beta?
Krita announced the first beta of 5.3 and 6.0 on 5 February 2026. The paired 5.3.0 and 6.0.0 releases followed on 24 March. As of 4 October 2026, the official release history lists 5.3.4 and 6.0.4, both dated 15 September. The beta is therefore a completed stage, not the current version status. How are Krita 5.3 and 6.0 different?
The two lines share the major feature work; the version split is chiefly the toolkit they are built with. Krita 5.3 uses Qt5, and Krita 6.0 uses Qt6. The notable additional 6.0 capability is native-Wayland color management on Linux, including support relevant to HDR, fractional scaling, and 10-bit displays. It depends on compositor support: Krita’s notes recommend KWin 6.4.4 or newer and warn that the Wayland color-management protocol is young. Behavior can differ with other compositors.

The March recommendation to use 5.3 for real work was made when 6.0 first shipped. Later point releases are listed in the release history, but that chronology alone does not establish a current stability recommendation. Check Krita’s current download information for platform availability before choosing a build. Details on the version split and platform caveats appear in the release notes and release announcement.

What can you do with the rebuilt text system?
Krita rewrote its text object and text-handling tools. The practical changes are aimed at placing and styling text as part of an illustration or layout, rather than treating text as a static object that must be adjusted elsewhere.
- Edit on canvas: change text directly in the document.
- Wrap text: flow it into an automatic wrapping region or through vector shapes. Shape-flow areas can be composed of multiple shapes.
- Set text on a path: attach text to a vector path and control its starting position.
- Style selected text: use the text-properties docker for text styling controls.
Krita says the system supports most, if not all, scripts fully. That wording is the project’s broad description, not a guarantee that every script, font, or complex typographic feature behaves identically in every document.

Working with Photoshop text
Krita can load Photoshop text objects, including advanced information such as text on a path and OpenType features. Saving text back to PSD is more limited because the format is complex, so do not assume perfect round-tripping between applications. See the release notes for the format details.

Vector editing and comic layouts
A new knife tool can merge and split vector objects, which Krita highlights as useful for vector-based comic page layouts. A selection toolbar also joins the vector workflow. These additions are most relevant when constructing or editing shapes, rather than painting directly on raster layers.
Fill, transform, and brushes
- The fill tool can close gaps, helping contain fills where outlines do not meet perfectly.
- The liquify transform tool is described as faster in the release announcement; no performance percentage is specified there.
- Pattern brush options add soft texturing, and the release notes describe an option to auto-invert a pattern for the eraser.
Assistants, filters, and HDR
Assistant configuration has been improved, and a curve-linear perspective assistant has been added. New filters include Propagate Colors and Color Overlay Mask. Krita also says blending modes were checked for correctness in HDR, a relevant change for users working in high-dynamic-range workflows.

What changed in dockers, recording, and plugins?
The recorder docker can capture in real time, and dockers can be added to the popup palette. Those changes make capture and access to tools more flexible within a painting session.
For Python plugin developers, the API gains brush-stroke generation, wrappers for additional UI widgets, and methods related to scratchpads, grids and guides, autosave state, and canvas panning. Bundled plugins include Brush Mutator, the re-enabled Python Palette Docker, and Workflow Buttons Docker. The API changes are detailed in the official release notes.

Which file-format changes matter?
- Radiance RGBE: support is added for this image format.
- JPEG XL: support is improved.
- Photoshop text: text objects can be imported with advanced information, but saving them back to PSD has limitations.
For artists moving files between applications, the PSD qualification is important: importing text is not the same as guaranteeing that every text feature will survive an edit-and-save round trip.
What should you know before choosing a version?
Choose based on the platform and display workflow you actually use, not just the major version number. If native Wayland color management on Linux is important, check that your compositor supports the relevant protocol; Krita recommends KWin 6.4.4 or above. If you depend on Android or ChromeOS, verify current availability rather than relying on the initial 6.0 announcement, which said those builds were not available at launch.
There is also a practical Windows testing detail: the March release announcement says portable Windows builds share settings and custom resources with an installed Krita. Keep that in mind if you intend to test a portable build without affecting an existing setup.
