The Instructables Pocket-Sized contest is a maker challenge built around projects small enough to carry. Archived examples range from a playable game in a tin to a portable Arduino kit, with robotics and electronics projects showing other ways makers have interpreted the idea. The available records do not establish whether the contest is currently open or provide its complete rules.
What does “pocket-sized” mean in these projects?
The examples treat pocket size as a practical design constraint: make something useful or entertaining, then keep it compact enough to carry. A container can do more than shrink the footprint; it can protect the build and keep its components together.
A game in a tin
Pocket Operation Game is a playable project housed in an Altoids tin. Its listed materials include an LED, buzzer, two AAA batteries, tweezers, nuts and screws, and assorted craft and workshop supplies. Those items belong to this particular build, not to pocket-sized projects generally.

- The cardstock is acid free and of archival quality; imported
- Pair with a Becky Higgins Project Life Binder and Becky Higgins Photo Pocket Pages to create a complete, designer photo album
A portable electronics kit
The maker of Pocket Arduino Kit frames the goal as being able to take an Arduino or clone along to tinker on the move. The project description presents a compact board with pins, reset, power LED, digital and analog pins, and a 9V battery connector. Tins serve as carriers for the board and organizers for parts and a battery; a serial converter or USB-to-TTL adapter is mentioned as a possible addition.
Robotics and other electronics
An Instructables tutorial documents a joystick-controlled robot arm based on Phenoptix’s Pocket Sized Robot Arm. An archived Zippo Alarm document describes an infrared alarm built into a lighter-style case. The alarm document reports a range of up to 15 cm or more in good conditions and with a full battery, dropping below 5 cm as batteries run down; these are the maker document’s claims, not independently verified measurements.

What is known about the contest rules?
An archived prompt reproduced in Instructables – The Card Game says: “The Pocket Sized Contest is open. Your title must have the word ‘miniature’ in it.” That wording documents a prompt reproduced in the card game; it should not be treated as a current rule or a complete set of entry requirements.
The available records do not establish whether the contest is open now, or verify current dates, eligibility, prizes, or full judging criteria. An Instructables profile for PocketSized lists three projects and credits the account with First Prize in the Pocket-Sized contest, but does not provide full results or dates.

- MADE IN USA FROM AMERICAN HARDWOODS - The knife pieces are made from beautiful maple and cherrywood. The packaging is reminiscent of the toys and gifts available at general stores from generations ago.
- SAFETY FIRST - The blade in the kit has a rounded point and no sharp edges. Recommended for ages 7 and up. Choking hazard for children under 3 years.
How to compare pocket-sized builds
No official judging rubric is established by these records. As a practical way to assess the examples—not as contest scoring criteria—consider:
- Carryability: Is the finished project genuinely small and convenient to bring along?
- Use on the move: Does it provide a game, a way to tinker, or another clear use while carried?
- Protection and organization: Does its enclosure protect the build or keep its pieces and power source together?
- Build burden: What tools, assembly, and technical work does the project require?
The projects illustrate different trade-offs: a tin can enclose a game, while another tin can carry electronics and organize loose parts. A compact technical build may be highly portable but involve more assembly than a simple game.
