Fold a square of lightweight paper into a three-dimensional bell, then close its points and add a hanging loop. You can use cardstock for a firmer shape or heavyweight vellum for a translucent finish. The tutorials below use different folding and hanging sequences, so follow one complete method rather than combining their steps.
Choose paper and a hanging method
A square is the essential starting point. The cited instructions use different sizes: All Things Paper cuts a 5-inch square from an index card, while The Saturday Evening Post uses a 6-inch square of paper. An educational activity allows a square of any size and advises against paper too heavy to fold. These are examples, not a required standard.

| Choice | What the cited instructions say |
|---|---|
| Cardstock or index card | A practical choice for a firmer bell. All Things Paper uses an index card; its author notes cardstock may need glue only where the points meet. All Things Paper |
| Heavyweight vellum | An option for a translucent look. All Things Paper’s author reports that it folded successfully and let light show through, and suggests tape for extra security. All Things Paper |
| Starting size | Examples are 5 inches square (All Things Paper) and 6 inches square (The Saturday Evening Post); an educational activity permits any square size. All Things Paper; The Saturday Evening Post; ERIC activity |
| Hanging | All Things Paper uses ornament cord and beads; The Saturday Evening Post threads a beaded wire through the bell. Choose one tutorial’s complete hanging method. All Things Paper; The Saturday Evening Post |
For the All Things Paper approach, gather your square, ruler and cutting tool if needed, scissors, and optional bone folder. Keep narrow double-sided tape and quick-drying paper glue nearby, plus ornament cord and beads for the hanging loop. A bone folder is optional but can help make crisp creases. The Saturday Evening Post’s alternate kit uses a 12-inch piece of wire, three beads, and needle-nose pliers; that is a different hanging method, not an extra requirement for the cord version.
Fold and close the bell using the All Things Paper method
- Cut a square from an index card or lightweight cardstock. The tutorial’s example is 5 inches square. Make your folds accurately and sharpen each crease with your fingers or an optional bone folder.
- Follow the folding sequence in the All Things Paper tutorial to form the bell. Its sequence is distinct from the one in The Saturday Evening Post, so do not substitute folds from that method midway through.
- Secure the inside folds with narrow strips of double-sided tape, as the tutorial describes. If using vellum, the author suggests tape for added security; cardstock may need only glue at the meeting points.
- Attach the ornament cord and beads according to the tutorial’s hanging instructions, then press the bell closed.
- Add a small amount of paper glue near the tip to hold the joined points. Let the adhesive set before hanging the ornament.
Alternative: follow the wire-and-bead method
The Saturday Evening Post’s October 15, 2013 tutorial begins with a 6-inch square. It makes horizontal, vertical, and diagonal guide creases, brings the corners toward the center, shapes the bell, glues three points, threads beaded wire through the form, and glues the final point. Use its complete instructions for this version; its wire assembly differs from the cord-and-bead approach above.
