James Novak’s 3D Print My Shirt project explores how to attach customized 3D-printed decoration across a shirt—or an irregular shape such as a trucker hat—without sewing together multiple printed fabric sections. The challenge is not simply printing a graphic: it is making a design that bonds to fabric over a large area and can be produced repeatably. Novak says his process uses heat and no glue, but he has not disclosed the method.
What is 3D Print My Shirt?
3D Print My Shirt is Novak’s project to put customized, raised 3D-printed decoration on garments. In Sam Freeman’s Make: profile, published January 25, 2025 (the page also displays January 24), the aim extends beyond decorating a flat T-shirt: Novak was also considering unusual shapes such as trucker hats. The project’s distinctive problem is applying decoration over an area larger than a printer bed without hand-sewing multiple printed fabric sections together. Make:’s profile of James Novak
Why is printing a design onto a shirt difficult?
A graphic that looks good on screen still has to work as a manufactured object. The printed decoration needs enough contact area at its base to attach to the fabric, while the visible design must retain its intended appearance. Novak described designing a font around both demands: “I needed to design a font that had a reasonable surface area at the base for bonding to fabric, but then accentuated the colour-change of the filament I was using.”

Scale adds another constraint. If a decoration is larger than the printer’s build area, the design and process must accommodate that span without relying on manually joining many fabric sections. Novak’s interest in applying the idea to a shaped item such as a hat makes the problem more than enlarging a flat print: the material and graphic must work on an irregular surface, too.
How does Novak attach 3D prints to fabric?
Novak told Make: that he uses heat and no glue. He also said the specific process remains a trade secret, after many attempts—including burned shirts—to get it right. The profile does not provide temperatures, equipment, bonding parameters, or a step-by-step recipe. Readers therefore cannot reproduce his exact method from the published account, and the article does not establish a general technique for printing on fabric.

What materials did the project experiment with?
Make: captions identify TPU, PLA, and recycled plastics in prototype images; Novak also referred to experimenting with color-change filament. Those materials are evidence of the project’s exploration, not a tested recommendation for readers. The profile does not specify a printer, filament brand, garment construction, or material combination that others can rely on.
What durability evidence has been reported?
Make: reports that Novak’s test shirts completed 20 wash cycles and describes a demonstration in which removing the decoration tore or damaged the shirt. Novak said his test shirts had been through “dozens of washes” without issues and that removal required ripping cotton fibres. These are project-specific tests reported by Novak and Make:, not independent validation, a controlled comparison, or a guarantee that every garment or print will perform the same way.

What happened with the project’s crowdfunding and shirt-reuse idea?
The 2025 Make: article reports that Novak launched a limited-edition Kickstarter to explore scaling the process. It does not establish the campaign’s current status or whether the project is currently selling shirts. The profile also says he was accepting used shirts and offering a discount on a later order, with the goal of reusing old filament; that offer is historical and should not be assumed to remain available.

Freeman’s Make: profile says Novak began studying 3D printing in 2009 and worked on what the article describes as the first single-part 3D-printed bicycle frame in 2014. That “first” characterization belongs to the article; the profile is not an independent verification of the priority claim. It also recounts Novak’s earlier experiments combining 3D printing and wool for Woolmark, including prototypes that kept the textile-and-printing idea with him.

The profile offers a portrait of a maker solving a design-for-manufacture problem, rather than a technical specification or independent evaluation. It does not disclose the bonding recipe, compare methods under controlled conditions, or verify 3D Print My Shirt’s current operation. Its most useful insight is the design trade-off Novak describes: the decoration’s base must be suited to bonding, while the visible form still has to deliver the intended visual effect.
