Sound Wave is a 2007 artwork by Jean Shin, described in a contemporary account as a cascading wave made by melting and sculpting records. Its visible record labels make the material source part of the image: a collection of music becomes a sculptural form.

Who made Sound Wave?
Artist Jean Shin’s official work listing identifies SOUND WAVE as a 2007 work (Jean Shin’s work listing). The title and date are also reported in a 2008 article from Make: (Make:’s 2008 description).
What does the artwork look like, and what is it made from?
Make: describes records melted and sculpted into a cascading wave, with colorful labels still visible. That account offers a concise sense of the work’s visual effect: the records are both the building material and a reminder of the music they once held.
#1 Best Overall
- COLLECTION STARTER lots can be used for vintage decoration, as party items or unique gifts
- GENUINE VINYL RECORDS are in this lot. Most of these records are playable but some may come scuffed or the labels may have faded
- CREATIVE TYPES use these to make room dividers, curtains, shop decors, heat them up and shape them into bowls, ashtrays, key chains, guitar picks
- VARIOUS GENRES may be found in this lot. Blues, rock, jazz, rnb, hip-hop, pop, sould, disco, country genres are most common ones
What does the wave represent?
Make: interprets the wave as a reference to successive technologies that render older recording media obsolete. The article also reads the work as giving physical form to music’s ephemerality and to one person’s musical tastes, preserved in a personal record collection. These are the article’s interpretations, not a documented statement by Shin.
