Photoshop is useful for designing and preparing a cross-stitch motif, but its grid is only a workspace aid—not a finished, printable counted chart. Set your intended stitch dimensions, align the artwork to a configurable grid, then add chart notation and a thread key yourself or convert the image in dedicated pattern software.

Plan the stitch size before you draw

Choose how many stitches wide and tall the motif should be. Those dimensions determine the amount of detail you can preserve; paired with the fabric count, they also determine the finished size. For example, STUDIO·ITY illustrates that an 8 × 8-inch design corresponds to 112 × 112 stitches on 14-count Aida, or 144 × 144 stitches on 18-count Aida. These are sizing examples, not a required project size.

Calculate the stitch dimensions for the fabric you intend to use before building the image. Starting with a target stitch count makes it easier to keep the subject readable and prevents designing an image whose eventual physical size is wrong for the project.

Prepare artwork that can become stitches

Crop the image to its important subject and simplify busy details if they will disappear when reduced to stitch-sized cells. A 2015 PDXstitch Photoshop tutorial describes a workflow in which each pixel corresponds to one stitch, with the prepared image then converted in a program such as MacStitch or KG-Chart. That is one workable approach, not a requirement for every Photoshop document.

If you use the pixel-per-stitch approach, make the image dimensions match the desired stitch width and height. Otherwise, you can use Photoshop as a design canvas and align the artwork to a grid representing the intended cells. In either case, inspect the design at its eventual stitch scale: details that look clear when enlarged may merge or vanish in the finished embroidery.

Set up Photoshop’s grid

  1. Open Photoshop’s Preferences or Settings, then choose Guides, Grid, & Slices. The wording and menu location can vary by operating system and installed version.
  2. Set the grid spacing to match the working cell size you want to use for the design, and choose subdivisions that make individual cells easy to align.
  3. Show the grid and use it to position or inspect the artwork. Adobe documents that grid spacing and subdivisions are configurable in these settings: Set guide and grid preferences in Photoshop.

A grid is a consistent pattern across the canvas. Guides are separate alignment landmarks that you can place where needed. Adobe describes guides as nonprinting lines floating over the image, so neither the workspace grid nor guides should be assumed to print as chart lines: Create guides in Photoshop.

Decide what “chart” means for your project

A design image with a visible working grid can help you plan a motif, but a counted chart must communicate how to stitch it. Each chart cell represents a stitch, and the stitcher needs a reliable way to distinguish the thread shades represented in those cells.

  • For a design mock-up: The artwork and Photoshop grid may be enough to plan placement, provided you can identify the colors you intend to use.
  • For a usable counted pattern: Include an unambiguous symbol or identifier for each shade, a corresponding color or thread key, and readable row and column counting aids. A grid alone does not provide that information.

Keep any chart lines, symbols, or other marks intended to appear on paper on image layers; Photoshop’s workspace overlays are not printed chart content by default.

Choose a Photoshop-only or conversion workflow

Build the notation in Photoshop

You can add chart lines and symbols as artwork layers, but you will also need to maintain the shade-to-symbol assignments and create a matching key. Check that adjacent cells remain distinguishable and that symbols and counting aids are legible at the printed size. This gives you direct control over the appearance, but the grid and key must be made into actual document content rather than relying on workspace overlays.

Convert the prepared image in chart software

The PDXstitch tutorial positions Photoshop as a preparation step and describes converting the result in dedicated pattern software. ChartStitch describes stitch-cell charts, symbols, a floss list, and export options; Makerfern describes symbols, a numbered grid, a key, and stitch counts. These are the tools’ own feature descriptions, not an independent comparison or test: ChartStitch and Makerfern.

A conversion tool can supply chart notation and thread information that a Photoshop image does not create automatically. Review its output rather than assuming every automatic color assignment or symbol is suitable for your design.

Review color, symbols, and print output

There is no established mandatory maximum color count for a cross-stitch chart. A reduced palette can make a photo-based design easier to read and stitch, but palette size is a practical design choice rather than a universal rule. Keep shades distinguishable in the key, and check that similar colors do not become confusing when viewed as symbols or printed.

  • Confirm that every thread shade has a distinct identifier and appears in the key.
  • Check that each chart cell represents one stitch and that row and column markers are easy to follow.
  • Inspect the chart at actual print size; zoomed-in screen readability is not enough.
  • Check page tiling and make sure the key remains with the relevant chart pages before treating the result as print-ready.

The cited Photoshop guidance explains grid and guide behavior, but does not establish Photoshop-specific export settings for counted charts. Verify pagination and legibility in the print output you produce.
