In the United States, Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June. The next U.S. observance is June 20, 2027; in 2026, it fell on June 21. Other countries follow different dates and traditions.
When is Father’s Day in the United States?
The U.S. observes Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June, so the calendar date changes from year to year. It fell on June 21 in 2026 and will fall on June 20 in 2027.

How did Father’s Day begin?
Two early observances
Father’s Day developed through separate local events, rather than one uncontested beginning. On July 5, 1908, a memorial service in Fairmont, West Virginia, honored fathers among the men killed in the Monongah mine disaster. It was a local observance, not the immediate start of an annual holiday.
In Spokane, Washington, Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for a day honoring fathers. The state’s first observance took place on June 19, 1910. The Fairmont service and Spokane celebration were distinct milestones in the holiday’s early history.

From proclamation to permanent observance
President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a nationwide proclamation recognizing Father’s Day in 1966. Congress acted in 1972, and President Richard Nixon signed the measure making the observance permanent. The 1966 proclamation was not the step that permanently established the holiday.
Why does Father’s Day fall on different dates around the world?
There is no single worldwide Father’s Day date. Countries have their own calendars and customs, so the U.S. third-Sunday-in-June rule does not apply everywhere.

Hallmark’s May 27, 2026 release says more than 72 million Father’s Day cards are exchanged annually industry wide, but a note written in your own words can be meaningful without a store-bought card.

What to write in a Father’s Day card
- Be specific: mention a piece of advice, a shared memory, or a small thing you appreciate.
- Keep the tone true to your relationship, whether that means warm, funny, grateful, or simple.
- If you cannot be together, say what you would have enjoyed doing together and suggest a time to catch up.
For historical context, HISTORY quotes Johnson’s 1966 proclamation: “I urge all our people to give public and private expression to the love and gratitude which they bear for their fathers.”
