The Chinese Year of the Snake began on January 29, 2025, and ran through February 16, 2026, according to the UN Postal Administration. In the Chinese zodiac, 2025 is the Wood Snake. The zodiac year is not the same thing as Spring Festival: the festival’s celebrations begin around Lunar New Year and traditionally continue to Lantern Festival.
When did the Year of the Snake start and end?
The Chinese Year of the Snake began January 29, 2025, and ended February 16, 2026, according to the UN Postal Administration. The Chinese government and the Congressional Research Service also identify January 29 as the start date.

In the United States, the date falls between January 21 and February 19; in 2025, it was January 29. timeanddate.com explains the date using the second new moon after the winter solstice.
What does “Year of the Snake” mean?
It names one year in the Chinese zodiac, a calendrical system with 12 animals arranged within a 60-year cycle. That larger cycle combines the 12 earthly branches with 10 heavenly stems associated with five elements. The Smithsonian identifies 2025 as the Wood Snake; that designation combines the animal with an element rather than describing a separate zodiac animal.

Snake-related personality descriptions or predictions belong to traditional or popular interpretations, not evidence-based claims about individuals. The zodiac label alone does not establish what will happen to someone born in that year.
How is the zodiac year different from Spring Festival?
The Year of the Snake refers to the zodiac period, from January 29, 2025, through February 16, 2026, in the dates given by the UN Postal Administration. Spring Festival, or Chun Jie, is the Chinese New Year observance. The Chinese government’s 2025 guide describes its festivities as continuing from New Year to Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day.

These dates describe different things: a year-long calendar designation and a festival period. UNESCO inscribed “Spring festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of traditional new year” on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024. The recognition concerns the festival’s living social practices, not the zodiac animal or a single national event.
How do people celebrate Chinese Spring Festival?
Practices vary across families and communities. A Chinese government guide describes preparation and celebration through family reunion, renewal, continuity and change, and community life; it is not a universal checklist for every celebrant.

Fireworks and firecrackers are also described as customs, but that does not mean they are lawful or appropriate in every location. Check local rules and safety guidance before using them.

No. “Lunar New Year” can serve as a broad label when discussing several traditions, but the specific observances have distinct names and customs. The Congressional Research Service uses Spring Festival or Chun Jie for Chinese New Year, Seollal for Korean New Year, and Tết Nguyên Đán or Tết for Vietnamese New Year.

The zodiac animals also differ in the Vietnamese tradition: buffalo, cat, and goat take the places held by ox, hare, and sheep in the Chinese list. Customs vary by country and region, so a practice documented for Chinese Spring Festival should not automatically be attributed to every Lunar New Year celebration.
