Renri (人日), often translated as Human Day, is the seventh day of the first month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. Its Gregorian date changes each year. The day is linked in traditional folklore to the creation of humanity, and its customs have included seven-vegetable soup, human-shaped decorations, and other regional foods and activities.
What is Renri?
Renri is also known by names including 人节, 人胜节, and 人七日. In the traditional creation story, the goddess Nuwa made people on the seventh day after creating the six domestic animals. This is folklore explaining the day’s association with humanity’s birthday, not a historical account of human origins. A 2023 cultural feature from the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People’s Republic of China describes the names and legend (Da Zhonghua).
When is Renri?
Renri falls on day seven of the first month in the Chinese lunisolar calendar, so its date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year. It is not simply January 7. Japan’s Jinjitsu, by contrast, is observed on January 7; the two observances are related historically but follow different calendars.
How Renri has been observed
Food traditions
One documented food is 七宝羹, often rendered seven-treasure soup: a preparation made with seven vegetables. The ingredients and dishes associated with the day have varied by place and period, so there is no single recipe that represents every Renri celebration. The National Ethnic Affairs Commission’s cultural account also describes a baked food called 薰天饼 and regional variations in food customs (Da Zhonghua).

Regional examples should be understood locally, not as universal customs. The same account notes seven-vegetable practices in Guangdong and that some places tossed yu sheng; other regions had their own rice dishes, cakes, or porridges. It also describes customs changing over time, with some food practices continuing even where the festival name became less familiar.
Human-shaped ornaments and other activities
Renri customs were not limited to eating. Historical descriptions include human-shaped figures cut from paper or made from colored silk or gold leaf, displayed on screens or windows, and ornaments worn or exchanged. Accounts also mention climbing and composing poetry. The Palace Museum’s description of Beijing folk customs discusses the seventh day as 人日 and records paper figures and hair ornaments (民间庆正月). A passage reproduced by the Tianmen Municipal People’s Government likewise lists food, figures, exchanged ornaments, and climbing (风俗信仰).

Renri and Japan’s Jinjitsu are related, but not identical
Jinjitsu is one of Japan’s five seasonal festivals and takes place on January 7. Its best-known food is nanakusa-gayu, rice porridge with seven herbs, eaten with wishes for health. Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries connects the observance’s name with the old Chinese practice of divining people on the seventh day (季節を感じながら行事食を楽しむ).

The customs behind Japanese Jinjitsu combine Chinese-derived day-by-day divination traditions with Japanese young-grass gathering. Kokugakuin University notes that seven-grass soup spread in the Heian period and became an observance across social classes in the Edo period. The usual seven plants are not a universal fixed mix; combinations can vary by region (Jinjitsu).

Making seven-vegetable soup for Renri
If you want to mark Renri with seven-vegetable soup, treat the number seven as a traditional form rather than a standardized ingredient list. The documented cultural account supports the dish but does not prescribe one universal set of vegetables or a fixed recipe. Choose a locally available mix that suits the soup you want to cook, and describe it as your version rather than the definitive Renri recipe.
