Akshaya Tritiya is a Hindu festival associated with the third lunar day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha. It is linked with worship, charity and the custom of buying gold, but purchasing anything is not a requirement. In 2026, calendars differ on the date: Drik Panchang lists April 19 for New Delhi, while the India Meteorological Department’s Rashtriya Panchanga lists April 20. Follow a local panchang for the timing relevant to your observance.
What is Akshaya Tritiya?
Also known as Akha Teej, Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third tithi of Shukla Paksha—the waxing or bright half of the lunar month—in Vaishakha. The Ministry of Tourism describes it as a festival that usually falls in April or May on the Gregorian calendar. Ministry of Tourism: Akshaya Tritiya
“Akshaya” is commonly understood as “never diminishing.” Drik Panchang describes a belief that spiritual acts such as prayer, yajna, offerings to ancestors and charity performed on this day bring enduring merit. When is Akshaya Tritiya in 2026?
The date depends on the calendar source and location. Drik Panchang’s New Delhi listing places the observance on Sunday, April 19, 2026. It gives the Tritiya tithi as starting at 10:49 on April 19 and ending at 07:27 on April 20, local time. The same listing gives a puja muhurat of 10:49–12:20 on April 19. Why do people buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya?
Buying gold is a popular custom associated with the festival. The Ministry of Tourism’s description mentions gold and real estate as auspicious purchases, and Drik Panchang also notes the gold-buying association. These are customs grounded in beliefs about auspiciousness; the sources do not establish that buying gold is required or that it guarantees wealth, appreciation or investment returns.

Practices are not identical across every community. The Ministry listing describes Vishnu worship, while a 2026 greeting from Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted good deeds, charity and service. If you choose to buy gold jewellery
Use ordinary product checks rather than treating the festival date as proof of value. BIS’s consumer guidance says buyers can use the BIS Care app’s “Verify HUID” feature to check hallmarked gold jewellery that bears a HUID. It also says jewellery or a sample can be tested at a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre for a charge. BIS: Consumer protection

Check the hallmark and invoice
- For HUID-marked hallmarked jewellery, use BIS Care’s “Verify HUID” feature to check the six-digit alphanumeric code.

- Check that the invoice identifies each article and states its net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. BIS: Common Consumer FAQ
