How did Father’s Day begin?
The commonly credited Spokane story
The U.S. Census Bureau traces the idea to Sonora Dodd, who conceived it in 1909 after hearing a Mother’s Day sermon. She wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who had raised six children. Spokane held its first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910, following a proclamation by the city’s mayor. The Census Bureau’s account of Father’s Day says President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in 1966, designating the third Sunday in June; the observance became annual and permanent in 1972 under President Richard Nixon.
Why the origin is not entirely settled
The U.S. Department of State notes that the holiday’s origin is unclear and describes competing accounts, including a 1908 church service in West Virginia and an event in Vancouver, Washington. It also identifies Dodd as the holiday’s strongest promoter. So she is central to the commonly documented Spokane story, but it is more accurate to recognize that other early claims exist. The State Department’s Father’s Day resource also describes the holiday as honoring fathers and men who serve as father figures.

What should you get your dad for Father’s Day?
Start with what the recipient enjoys and how you want to spend the day together, rather than treating a popular category as a universal recommendation. A useful choice balances personal fit, budget, delivery timing, and how confident you are about details such as clothing size, compatibility, or taste.
- Choose a personal or distinctive gift. In NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics’ 2026 U.S. survey, 44% of respondents said a unique or different gift mattered most, while 34% prioritized a gift that creates a special memory.
- Make time together the gift. A meal, outing, tickets, or another activity connected to his interests can create a shared memory. In the same survey, 31% planned to give an experience.
- Keep it practical when that fits him. Clothing or a gift card may be useful choices if you know his preferences; a gift card can also leave the final selection to him.
- Add a card or a personal message. A greeting card is a simple way to mark the day, including when you cannot visit in person. The State Department’s resource discusses cards as a way to contact a father who cannot be visited.
- Consider a subscription tied to an interest. In the 2026 survey, 45% said they were interested in giving a subscription box. The figure describes interest among respondents, not a guarantee that this option suits any particular recipient.

The NRF/Prosper survey included 7,914 U.S. adults aged 18 and older, was conducted April 30–May 6, 2026, and reported a margin of error of plus or minus 1.1 percentage points. Its results describe respondents’ plans and preferences before the holiday; they are not final sales figures.
What do the 2026 Father’s Day spending figures mean?
NRF and Prosper estimated that U.S. consumers expected to spend $27.9 billion for Father’s Day in 2026, with average expected spending of $226.58. The survey found that 77% planned to celebrate. These are survey estimates and stated plans, not a record of completed purchases or a recommended amount to spend. There is no universal spending norm in these figures.

Shopping plans were nearly evenly split between two channels: 38% said they planned to shop online and 37% at department stores. NRF Chief Economist and Executive Director of Research Mark Mathews said in the organization’s June 10, 2026 release, “Despite economic pressures, Father’s Day remains just as important to shoppers as in years past.” NRF says it has conducted its annual Father’s Day survey with Prosper since 2003.
