A zodiac cutout illustration can combine bold sign glyphs, star patterns, mythic figures, or layered paper shapes. The key design choice is what “zodiac” means in your image: astrological signs and astronomical constellations are related traditions, but they are not interchangeable labels. A clear key and a deliberate visual approach make the work easier to read.
Sign symbols and constellations are different visual subjects
Zodiac sign glyphs are compact symbols; constellation illustrations depict star patterns, often with a figure or other imagery associated with them. NASA notes that symbols for the planets, Sun, Moon, and zodiac constellations were developed for use in both astronomy and astrology. Its Solar System Symbols page offers a visual reference if you want to label glyphs accurately.
For a graphic cutout, glyphs can serve as the focal shape, while stars, arcs, or a contrasting ground suggest a celestial setting. For a more figurative image, constellation patterns can be paired with silhouettes or mythological imagery. Neither approach is required: choose the one that fits the idea and make the distinction clear in the caption or artwork when it matters.
Keep astronomical claims precise
The zodiac constellations lie along the Sun’s apparent path across the sky, but a horoscope sign assigned to a calendar month does not necessarily match the constellation where the Sun is actually located during that month today. NASA’s The Path of the Sun, the Ecliptic explains that horoscope sign assignments reflect an ancient arrangement. If your illustration claims to show the Sun in a particular constellation, avoid treating a sign’s familiar date range as proof of the Sun’s current position.

For work intended to communicate scientific information, label special symbols rather than assuming every viewer will recognize them. NASA’s symbol page relays IAU style guidance that a key should be given when special symbols are used in scientific publications. A small legend can identify each glyph or mark, while a caption can distinguish a constellation drawing from a horoscope sign.
Use historical constellation prints as visual references
Albrecht Dürer’s Southern Celestial Hemisphere is one historical example of constellation imagery: the National Gallery of Art catalogs it as a woodcut on laid paper and describes constellation and mythological figures in the composition. Look at how the print brings together celestial patterns and figures, then adapt only what serves your own composition. It is a reference for historical print imagery, not a required model for every modern zodiac illustration or evidence for a single origin story of zodiac cutout art.

Plan the cutout around shape and legibility
Before cutting, decide whether the image is a flat graphic or a construction with overlapping layers. A flat design can use a single silhouette and contrasting backing; layered paper can separate the sign glyph, stars, and background into distinct planes. These are practical visual options, not ranked methods.

- For a symbol-led design: make the glyph large enough to read, and keep nearby decoration from competing with its outline.
- For a constellation-led design: distinguish stars and connecting lines from any figure or decorative silhouette so the pattern remains legible.
- For layered paper: plan which shapes sit in front and leave bridges or connections where a cut would otherwise remove an enclosed area.
- For labeled work: include a key when the marks may be unfamiliar, especially if the image is presented as scientific information.
Try a paper-cut workflow
NASA JPL’s Space Origami: Make Your Own Starshade is a general paper-model activity, not a zodiac pattern. Its basic print-and-cut sequence can still inform a custom paper illustration.
- Draw or print your own zodiac-inspired design at the size you want to work with.
- Check that narrow shapes and enclosed areas will remain connected after cutting; simplify any fragile details.
- Cut around the outside lines to separate the design from the surrounding paper.
- If your design includes folds, score them gently with a stylus, retracted mechanical pencil, or empty ballpoint pen, following the NASA activity’s general approach.
- Place the cutout over a contrasting sheet or arrange separate layers to clarify the image’s hierarchy.
The NASA activity demonstrates a useful making sequence, but it does not supply a zodiac-specific template. Your own drawing determines the symbols, constellation details, and composition.
