A snowball fight can be an informal winter game or a structured team activity. Outside, agree on boundaries and turns before you begin; indoors, use balloons, soft balls or crumpled paper instead of real snow. Rules depend on the version: there is no single universal rule set.

How do you have a snowball fight?

For a casual outdoor game, gather players, choose a clear play area and decide when the round ends. Before starting, agree on boundaries, how teams or turns will work, and what counts as a hit. Keep the game friendly and pause if someone wants to stop. Published activities offer more specific rules, but they should be treated as individual games rather than universal rules.

How to play an indoor snowball-fight game

Do not use real snow indoors. Two documented alternatives use a balloon or soft ball, or scrunched paper. Choose based on the room, group size and whether you want points, a timed round or a quick team activity.

Version What the activity specifies Useful distinction
NHS balloon or soft-ball game The NHS Healthier Families activity describes four or more players outdoors, divided into two teams, using a balloon or soft ball. Players take turns throwing. A hit earns a point; if the other team catches the ball, the throwing team loses a point. Play for ten minutes, then compare points. NHS Healthier Families: “Belle and Beast’s Snowball Fight” The NHS describes this version as outdoors, although it uses a substitute for snow. Follow the activity’s scoring and timing if you choose it.
Diocese of Westminster paper-ball game A fast team game for young people using scrunched paper and a dividing line. Its instructions recommend clearing floor trip hazards and suggest a safety zone between teams to reduce accidental head-on collisions. Diocese of Westminster Youth Ministry: “‘Snowball’ Fight” Its advice is specific to the activity; it does not amount to comprehensive guidance for every room or group.
Other paper-ball activities The Scouts and Active Essex also describe team activities using paper balls and marked areas. The Scout Association: “YouShape paper snowball fight”; Active Essex: Winter Scouts Activity Booklet Use the rules and space arrangements in the specific activity you select.
Paper-ball group energizer The U.S. Department of Labor ILAB curriculum uses crumpled paper in a group energizer. U.S. Department of Labor ILAB: Supplier Curriculum This is a metaphorical exercise, not guidance for outdoor snow play.

Set up the room first

  1. Choose the activity and use only its specified substitute, such as a balloon, soft ball or scrunched paper.
  2. Clear floor trip hazards before play. If using the Diocese of Westminster activity, consider the suggested safety zone between teams to reduce accidental collisions.
  3. Mark the play area and any dividing line, then explain turns, scoring and when the game ends before the first throw.

Which version should you choose?

Match the format to the space and group rather than assuming one version suits everyone.

What does the historical record show?

The U.S. House of Representatives History, Art & Archives documents snowball fights among Capitol Pages, not the origin of snowball fights generally. Its earliest image of a Page fight in the collection dates to 1923; the article says reporters described the fights as annual by 1926. A 1928 photograph shows Pages forming teams by chamber, while other reported matches divided participants by political party. These records establish a history for this particular Capitol tradition, not a date when the activity was invented.
