Hot Wheels’ MoMA collaboration is part of a broader, multi-year design partnership between MoMA and Mattel—not a redesign by the museum. Announced on October 7, 2025, the partnership began with a seven-product capsule inspired by MoMA’s collection, including Hot Wheels models of the Jaguar E-Type Roadster and Citroën DS 23 Sedan.
What the MoMA and Mattel partnership includes
MoMA and Mattel announced a multi-year global partnership on October 7, 2025. The first capsule, planned for the 2025 holiday season, was described by MoMA as seven products inspired by the museum’s collection and spanning several Mattel brands. Hot Wheels is one part of that wider release. MoMA also said Mattel would sponsor the Samuel and Ronnie Heyman Family Art Lab, an interactive space where children and adults can explore modern and contemporary art. MoMA’s announcement names the Jaguar and Citroën Hot Wheels products.
The collaboration is framed as a meeting of art, design and play. Mattel’s collection page connects the cars to MoMA’s interest in automobiles as design objects, including the museum’s Automania exhibition. That is Mattel’s interpretation of the partnership, rather than evidence that MoMA redesigned the toys.

The launch announcement and Mattel’s collection page do not present precisely the same list. MoMA’s announcement names two Hot Wheels models; Mattel’s collection page also shows a Volkswagen Beetle. The distinction matters because a collection page may change over time.

Why put cars in a modern-art museum collaboration?
Mattel’s collection copy presents automobiles as design objects, placing the models in a conversation about form and industrial design as well as play. The display cases reinforce that approach: Mattel describes the Jaguar’s acrylic case as simulating a car displayed in a MoMA gallery, and the Beetle’s case as inspired by gallery display. Those details turn packaging into part of the collectible presentation, though they do not establish how the models look or perform outside the manufacturer’s description.

Jesse Goldstine, MoMA’s chief retail officer, said the collaboration aims to invite new audiences to experience the museum’s collection through creative play and design innovation. Nick Karamanos, Mattel’s senior vice president of entertainment partnerships, called it “more than a product launch” and “a global design partnership.” The Art Lab sponsorship is the institutional component alongside the consumer products.
