Microsoft Fluent Design is both a design language and a practical system of guidance, design assets, and platform-specific code libraries. Introduced in 2017 for a world of many devices and input methods, it has evolved into Fluent 2: a way to create recognizable Microsoft experiences across platforms without forcing every app into the same interface or codebase.
What is Microsoft Fluent Design?
Microsoft introduced Fluent Design at Build 2017 as an approach to intuitive, harmonious, responsive, and inclusive experiences across devices and interactions. Its original context included more than Windows screens: Microsoft highlighted varied devices and inputs such as touch, ink, voice, gaze, and gesture. Microsoft’s 2017 announcement describes that cross-device ambition.
Fluent is not just a visual style. It includes principles, layout and accessibility guidance, design assets, and implementation libraries. Microsoft now describes Fluent UI as “a collection of UX frameworks” for cross-platform apps that share code, design, and interaction behavior. In practice, the available code and assets vary by platform; shared design principles do not mean one identical interface or one universal library.

What is Fluent 2?
Fluent 2 is Microsoft’s evolution of the design system. Microsoft’s materials describe updates including a cohesive color system, design tokens, standardized corner treatments, customization options, expanded usage guidance, and accessibility notation. Fluent has continued to develop since its earlier iterations; there is no single release date established for Fluent 2 across every platform.
The central aim is recognizable consistency with room for platform conventions and product character. Microsoft says platform updates are tailored to the environments they support, rather than applied identically everywhere.
What are Fluent 2’s design principles?
Microsoft presents these principles as values that guide decisions, not a formula that mechanically determines every screen.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
Natural on every platform
Adapt to the device and use familiar platform conventions where they fit. Microsoft’s principle page says native components can be reused “80% of the time”; the page does not cite a study or methodology, so treat that as Microsoft’s design guidance, not an independently measured result.
Built for focus
Reduce visual noise so the product supports the person’s task instead of competing with it.
One for all, all for one
Consider different abilities and perspectives early. Fluent frames inclusive constraints as a way to improve the experience for everyone, rather than a late-stage accommodation.

Unmistakably Microsoft
Connect experiences through recognizable choices such as color, sound, illustration, and icons while still allowing individual products to have their own character. Microsoft’s Fluent 2 design system explains the principles and related guidance.
What does Fluent guidance cover?
Layout and spacing
Fluent’s layout guidance uses space to express relationships, hierarchy, and focus. Its global spacing ramp uses a four-pixel base unit, with exceptions such as 2, 6, and 10 pixels to align icons to the grid. This is a Fluent convention, not a universal web-design rule. Responsive layouts can scale, rearrange, or reveal different amounts of content as the available screen changes. See Microsoft’s layout guidance.

Materials
Microsoft documents four materials, each with a distinct purpose. They should not be assumed to behave identically across platforms, and Microsoft advises checking technical limitations before choosing one.

- Solid: an opaque surface that adapts to the current mode.
- Acrylic: a semi-transparent, frosted-glass effect intended for transient surfaces such as menus and popovers.
- Mica: an opaque surface subtly tinted by the desktop background while a window is active, and neutral when inactive.
- Smoke: a dimming layer that reduces the prominence of content behind a blocking modal.
Details and platform considerations are in Microsoft’s materials documentation.
Accessibility
Microsoft says Fluent components “meet or surpass WCAG 2.1 AA standards.” That statement concerns the component foundation; it is not a guarantee that every app built with Fluent will be accessible. Developers still need to follow component guidance and test the integrated product, including its content, interactions, and customizations. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance provides checkpoints for applying the system.
Interaction and onboarding
Fluent guidance extends beyond styling. For onboarding, Microsoft recommends help that is relevant, non-distracting, optional, focused on benefits, and coherent with the product. The guidance favors introducing help in context, making it possible to exit, explaining why a step matters, and using standard components. See Microsoft’s onboarding guidance.

Is Fluent Design only for Windows?
No. Microsoft provides distinct Fluent paths for React, Web Components, iOS, Android, and Windows in its Fluent 2 developer guide. Its broader Fluent UI portal also lists macOS and cross-platform resources. Windows developers are directed to WinUI; other platforms have their own libraries and conventions. The exact support and assets depend on the platform and library, so choose the relevant official documentation rather than assuming a Windows component has a direct equivalent everywhere.
Where can I get Fluent UI kits for Figma?
Microsoft hosts Fluent 2 UI kits in Figma. The offerings are organized into four tiers: a design-language file for shared styling variables; Core UI kits for web, iOS, and Android; Copilot kits for AI-focused patterns; and Labs kits for partner-led experimentation. Microsoft intends kit components and variables to map to implementation. Explore the current files and descriptions through Microsoft’s Fluent UI Figma page.
How do I use Fluent UI in React?
For a React project, Microsoft’s Fluent 2 guide specifies Fluent UI React v9, built with React and TypeScript. Its documented npm installation command is:
npm install @fluentui/react-components
The guide also shows Yarn as an installation option. Package versions and setup details can change, so confirm the current instructions in Microsoft’s Fluent 2 developer guide before starting or updating a project.
How should a team get started with Fluent?
- Identify the target platform. Decide whether the product is for React web, another web framework, Windows, iOS, Android, or another supported environment.
- Open the matching official design kit and library. Use the platform-specific resources in Microsoft’s Fluent 2 getting-started guidance and the relevant files on the Fluent UI Figma page.
- Set up the appropriate foundation. Configure the relevant provider or theme for a web library, or use the native package and setup instructions for a native platform.
- Follow component-specific usage and accessibility guidance. A component library supplies building blocks, but teams must still make sound choices about how components work together and test the resulting experience.
- Check release notes before migrating. Fluent offerings differ by platform, and updates are tailored to their environments; review the relevant library’s migration and maintenance guidance before changing an existing app.
When comparing implementation routes, assess platform conventions, component and pattern coverage, design-kit handoff, accessibility documentation, and migration requirements. There is no universally best Fluent library independent of a project’s platform and constraints.
