Fremantle artist Simon Gilby presented Entitlement 4 ‘Rubble Ghost’ at Sculpture at Bathers 2025, the event’s sixth edition, held from 4 to 21 April in Fremantle. The human-inspired figure stood on a small concrete island just off the beach; the exhibition was free to visit and has now concluded.
What was Sculpture at Bathers 2025?
The City of Fremantle’s 2025 announcement described the event as a showcase of 57 Western Australian sculptors at Bathers Beach Art Precinct / Manjaree. The program also included an indoor showcase at the WA Shipwrecks Museum. These were distinct settings within the program, not interchangeable venues or evidence that the same works appeared in both places.
Gilby described the beach event as a chance to put sculpture before people outside a conventional gallery audience. In a PerthNow interview published on 3 April 2025, he said: “Sculpture at Bathers is a rare kind of opportunity to present sculptures directly to an unmediated public audience.” He also said, “Artists are not censored nor need to self-censor, they are free to offend or delight.” Those comments express Gilby’s view of the opportunity; they do not establish that the exhibition had no curatorial standards.

“Sixth year” referred to the event’s sixth edition, not six consecutive annual exhibitions. Sculpture at Bathers began in 2013, and PerthNow reported that Gilby had work selected for every Bathers Beach exhibition since it began.
The official artist page said more than 100 entries from Western Australian sculptors were received for the 2025 exhibition. Its selection panel comprised Ron Bradfield Junior, S@B Aboriginal Cultural Consultant; Mark Datodi, S@B chair and Western Australian sculptor; independent writer and curator Aimee Dodds; and artistic director and lead curator Sandra Murray.

What is Rubble Ghost?
The 2025 catalogue lists the work as Entitlement 4 ‘Rubble Ghost’, made in 2025 from stainless steel and photoluminescent aggregate. Its listed dimensions are 165 × 60 × 40 cm. Contemporary coverage described a human-inspired figure standing on a small concrete island just off the beach.
The catalogue connects the work to a conflicted social conscience about global events and describes its intended effect as uncanny disquiet. Gilby spoke about leaving its meaning open: “I wanted there to be a sense of ambiguity around the figure. I hope not to tell anybody what to think, I hope that the visual engages them and then what happens after that is, in a way, their own business.”

He described the figure’s ghostliness as unsettling, saying it might appear to be “either transferring itself into space or pulling itself from space into its form.” That is Gilby’s account of the visual idea, rather than a single prescribed interpretation for viewers.
Was there a dispute over the 2025 selection?
A separate selection dispute was reported by the Fremantle Herald. Greg James said his work had been rejected because it was too racy; organizers disputed that characterization. The Herald quoted Sandra Murray saying nudity was not the issue and noting that other nude works were included. The available accounts establish that the parties disagreed, not an independently verified reason for the selection decision.
