The reported “300 per cent increase” was a rise in visits to the Mandurah Visitor Centre, not a verified count showing that tourism across the region rose by that amount. Mayor Rhys Williams said the centre received more than 138,000 visitors between July 2022 and June 2023, over 300 per cent more than the previous year. The August 2023 report also covered a separate police appeal after the Halls Head sculpture Santi Ikto was spray-painted.
What did the 300 per cent figure measure?
The figure referred to traffic through the Mandurah Visitor Centre over the financial year from July 2022 to June 2023. Mayor Rhys Williams reported more than 138,000 visits, an increase of over 300 per cent on the previous year. The report did not give the earlier count in the quoted passage.
That is a visitor-centre statistic, not a region-wide census of tourists. It also does not establish that the Giants of Mandurah trail alone caused the increase. A later report, published in June 2024, cited State Government figures of more than 86,000 exhibition visitors in the attraction’s first 12 months and $64 million in spending in the Peel region. Those figures cover a different period and use different measures; they should not be conflated with the visitor-centre comparison. The same report cited nearly 350,000 combined nights in local accommodation and an average stay of four nights among the reported exhibition visitors. Which sculpture was graffitied?
The police appeal concerned Santi Ikto, a Giant sculpture at Halls Head. The August 2023 report said CCTV captured a person spray-painting it on 4 August. Police Sergeant Geoff Hawley described a small amount of green paint on one foot.
The report does not establish a later outcome in the case. It is not evidence that police identified or charged anyone, or that the sculpture remains in the same condition today.
How was this different from the Coodanup fire?
The graffiti incident was separate from the fire that destroyed the original Coodanup foreshore sculpture in December 2022. A June 2024 report said Thomas Dambo rebuilt a sculpture at the site and named the replacement Yaburgurt Cirkelstone. The August 2023 report said the fire investigation remained open at the time it was published; the later coverage cited here does not establish a current police outcome for either incident. How to visit the Giants of Mandurah
The Giants are a self-guided outdoor sculpture attraction on Bindjareb Noongar lands. The official website provides a free Travellers’ Companion and map. Visitors can note a symbol at each sculpture and use the code-breaker to seek out the hidden Giant. Official material acknowledges the Bindjareb Noongar people as Traditional Custodians of Mandjoogoordap (Mandurah), and includes a welcome from Bindjareb Noongar Elder George Walley. Visit Mandurah currently lists five sculptures in Mandurah and one in Subiaco. Routes differ in length, grade and access, so choose individual walks to suit your plans rather than assuming the whole trail has one difficulty or accessibility level.

Follow marked trails and leave nature as you found it. The official visitor material presents the sculptures as artworks and folklore coming together on Country, rather than as an attraction detached from its place and Traditional Custodians. Are the sculptures still on display?
The current Visit Mandurah page lists the attraction and its routes. A November 2023 report said the sculptures would remain for at least three more years, but that historical extension announcement does not establish an end date beyond its reporting period.
