Year of the Snake New Year greeting cards were a 2025 seasonal subject, not a current-year greeting: Lunar New Year began on January 29, 2025, and the United Nations identifies the Year of the Snake period as running through February 16, 2026. For a painter, collector, or anyone looking back at the designs, the year offers a clear visual theme—snake imagery paired with ideas of wisdom, transformation, and renewal.
What did Year of the Snake cards mark?
In the Chinese zodiac, 2025 was the Year of the Wood Snake. The zodiac combines a cycle of 12 animals with five elements; these are cultural and calendrical frameworks, not universal predictions about an individual’s character or future. The Smithsonian describes the Chinese Spring Festival as a 15-day celebration concluding with the Lantern Festival. The United Nations gives the Year of the Snake period as January 29, 2025, through February 16, 2026.

What does the Snake symbolize in a 2025 greeting?
The Smithsonian associates the snake with wisdom, charm, and transformation. In a January 23, 2025 statement, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu described the year in terms of transformation, rebirth, resilience, and overcoming challenges. Those themes can guide an illustration or message, but they are interpretations rather than promises about what the year will bring.

Smithsonian Institution: Year of the Snake; FAO Director-General QU Dongyu’s January 23, 2025 statement.
What greeting belongs inside the card?
There is no single wording that represents every Lunar New Year community or language. A Shanghai municipal government greeting for the 2025 Spring Festival invokes success, happiness, good fortune, and a joyful, prosperous festival; it is one official example, not a universal formula. The Open University resource discusses traditional greetings and translations. Consult it directly before reproducing Chinese characters, transliteration, or translation, and retain the language and regional context rather than treating Mandarin forms as interchangeable with other languages or traditions.

Were physical Year of the Snake greeting cards issued?
Yes. Hong Kong’s government announced postage-prepaid Lunar New Year greeting cards among the Year of the Snake products associated with Hongkong Post’s 2025 philatelic release. This establishes that physical cards were issued; it does not establish present-day stock, a current seller, or availability in any particular region. - Language and context: Identify the community and language the greeting addresses. Avoid presenting one region’s custom or one language’s phrasing as universal across Asia.
- Recipient and tone: Use the recipient’s relationship to you to set the level of formality, and draw on celebration, renewal, or resilience without making personal predictions.
- Physical format and postage: If mailing a card, verify its dimensions, postage, and destination requirements with the relevant postal service; the historical Hongkong Post announcement alone does not establish current mailing terms.
- Collectible or timely greeting: A dated card may suit a collection or art reference even after its greeting season; a card intended for delivery should match the year and occasion when it will arrive.
Lunar New Year observances and zodiac conventions vary among communities. Naming the specific context—such as Chinese Lunar New Year or Spring Festival when that is what the card represents—is more accurate than using one tradition to stand for every observance.
