For a star graphic you can place over another design, choose a transparent PNG; for artwork that must stay crisp at different sizes, look for an SVG vector. A PSD is an editable Photoshop document, not simply another name for a finished transparent image. Check the individual download page for both the available formats and the license: “free download” does not automatically mean unrestricted commercial use.
Which star file format should you download?
| If you need to… | Look for… | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Place a star over a photo or colored background | Transparent PNG | PNG supports transparency, so the image can sit above another design without an opaque background. It is pixel-based; choose enough pixels for the size at which you will use it. Adobe’s PNG guide explains the format. |
| Resize a star while keeping edges crisp | SVG or another vector format | Vector artwork is defined by shapes and lines rather than a fixed grid of pixels, making it suitable for resizing. Adobe notes that “Vector images do not rely on pixels.” Adobe’s vector-image guide compares vector and raster artwork. |
| Keep editable Photoshop layers | PSD | PSD is Photoshop’s native working-document format and can preserve layers. It is distinct from an exported PNG. Confirm that the particular star listing actually includes a PSD file; the examples below do not establish general PSD availability. See Adobe’s Photoshop file-format documentation. |
Examples of free star downloads and their stated terms
These are examples of specific listings, not a guarantee that every star on the site has the same formats or permissions. Read the linked asset page and its current license before using a file.
SVG Repo: a star listing marked CC0
The SVG Repo “Stars” listing describes an SVG download and optimized PNG sizes, and labels that specific asset CC0. Verify the license record for the exact artwork you select rather than treating the label as a rule for all SVG Repo files.

To SVG’s star page presents three variants and describes SVG and transparent PNG downloads. Its stated terms are free for personal and editorial use; the page also says finished products may be sold but standalone redistribution of the files is prohibited. Those conditions apply to its own downloads, not to star graphics generally.

How to choose and use a transparent star graphic
- Decide how you will use it. Choose PNG for a transparent, pixel-based graphic in a fixed output size; choose SVG when you need scalable vector artwork; choose PSD only if you need a Photoshop working document with editable layers.
- Check the actual download contents. A page may offer PNG and SVG but not PSD. Confirm the format, and for PNG check that the background is transparent and the image has sufficient pixel dimensions for your intended output.
- Read the license on that asset’s page. Confirm whether your use is personal, editorial, commercial, or restricted, and whether attribution is needed. Pay particular attention to rules against reselling or redistributing the original design files.
- Use the file in a compatible workflow. Place a transparent PNG over the background in your design, or open an SVG in software that supports vector artwork. A PSD is useful when the supplied document includes the layers you need to edit; do not assume a PNG download can provide those layers.
What “free download” does—and does not—tell you
It tells you that a download is offered without charge under the page’s stated conditions; it does not, by itself, settle whether you can use the art commercially, modify it, credit the creator, or redistribute the file. The examples above have different terms, so there is no single license rule for free star clipart. Asset formats and terms can also change, making the specific listing the relevant reference.
