For March 8, 2026, useful International Women’s Day materials include the UN’s history and current theme, age-appropriate classroom prompts, and activities about rights, representation and women’s achievements. The ideas below are a practical starting point for a class or community event; the Canadian toolkit cited here is designed for Canadian learners, so check its prompts against your local curriculum.
What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 and recognizes women’s achievements across national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political divisions. The United Nations says the observance emerged from labor movements in North America and Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. The UN officially recognized the day in 1977, and links the March 8 date strongly to women’s movements during the Russian Revolution in 1917. That history is more complex than a single-event origin story. UN background and history.

What is the 2026 theme?
The United Nations’ 2026 theme is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.” It calls for action to dismantle barriers to equal justice, including discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, harmful practices and social norms. This is the UN’s theme; local organizers may use a separate campaign slogan. The UN says women have 64 per cent of the legal rights men hold worldwide—a specific comparison about legal rights, not a measure of all rights, equality or outcomes. UN International Women’s Day observance.
To make the theme concrete, UNESCO’s 2026 observance connects rights with everyday life: learning and sharing knowledge, expressing oneself freely, accessing reliable information, being safe in public and digital spaces, and participating fully in cultural, scientific and social life. These examples can help turn a broad theme into questions students can discuss. UNESCO’s International Women’s Day page.

Classroom materials and activity ideas
For Kindergarten to Grade 1: begin with respect and representation
The Government of Canada’s learning toolkit suggests age-sensitive topics for younger children, including friendship and respect, hobbies and interests, and representation in stories. Invite learners to notice who gets to be adventurous, helpful, curious or brave in the books they read. Ask what the characters enjoy doing and whether those interests are treated as belonging to everyone. The toolkit also includes discussion and research-project material; use its grade-specific sections to choose an appropriate task. Government of Canada International Women’s Day learning toolkit.
For older students: connect rights to examples
Use the UN theme and UNESCO’s everyday-rights examples to structure a discussion or short research assignment. Students might examine how access to education, reliable information, expression, safety or participation affects people’s opportunities. Ask them to distinguish a right written into law from whether people can exercise it in practice, and to support claims with reliable sources. The Canadian toolkit offers further discussion questions and materials for older learners, but its prompts may need adapting to the class’s age, location and curriculum.

For a multi-lesson reading activity: use a book study as an option
A school-resource page describes a five-lesson, hour-long book study based on Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History by Vashti Harrison. Its activities combine literacy, history, drama and art objectives. The page also links reading lists and children’s activities, so the book is one possible route rather than a requirement. International Women’s Day school resources.
For an event or display: make the theme visible
Choose one everyday-rights example—such as learning, expression, safety or participation—and invite learners to create a short written response, illustration or display about what that right means in daily life. Pair the work with a brief explanation of the March 8 observance and the 2026 UN theme. Use the source materials above to supply context, and make clear whether a statement reflects the UN’s theme or a local event’s framing.
