The flag of Spain has three horizontal stripes: red, yellow and red. Its central yellow stripe is twice as wide as either red stripe. Spain’s government traces the flag’s origin to the reign of Charles III, while the present constitutional design and rules for using the flag are set out in later legal instruments.
What does the flag of Spain look like?
The national flag has two red stripes—one at the top and one at the bottom—with a yellow stripe between them. The yellow stripe is twice the width of either red stripe. This is the design described in Spain’s Constitution and on the Spanish government’s overview of the state symbols.
The constitutional description establishes the stripe arrangement and proportions. It does not, by itself, provide every technical specification for producing a flag; Spain’s legal framework also includes a decree on the technical colors.

What do the colors on Spain’s flag mean?
Spain’s laws establish red and yellow as the flag’s colors, but the official sources cited here do not assign a separate symbolic meaning to each color. The legal symbolism applies to the flag as a whole: Article 1 of Law 39/1981 says, “The flag of Spain symbolizes the nation; it is a sign of the sovereignty, independence, unity and integrity of the homeland and represents the higher values expressed in the Constitution.” This is an English translation of the Spanish statutory text, not a separately published official English translation.
Does the Spanish flag always have a coat of arms?
The constitutional definition of the national flag specifies its red-yellow-red stripes and their proportions. Whether a particular display includes a coat of arms depends on the applicable design and context; the sources cited here do not establish that every Spanish flag must show one. For a flag used in an official or otherwise regulated setting, consult the current consolidated legal text and the rules for that specific display rather than assuming that a retail flag is suitable.

When did the Spanish flag originate?
Spain’s government dates the flag’s origin to the reign of Charles III, from 1759 to 1788. It also notes that the flag underwent historical variations, so this origin claim should not be read as saying that every feature of today’s design was fixed during that reign. The present constitutional design is stated in the 1978 Constitution, and Law 39/1981 governs use of the Spanish flag and other flags and ensigns.
