The former Sunset Hospital in Dalkeith is not established as an operating arts hub. A 2013 proposal envisaged a gallery, café and function centre; the latest official update, dated 30 June 2026, says the Western Australian Government was seeking redevelopment proposals for the heritage precinct. That announcement does not name a preferred proponent or set out a delivery schedule.
What was proposed for the former hospital?
A PerthNow report published on 31 October 2013 said legislation had been introduced to enable restoration of the heritage-listed site and described plans for a gallery, café and function centre. Those were proposed uses, not confirmation that the venues were built or opened. The report’s headline described an ambition, rather than a completed makeover. Read the 2013 PerthNow report.
What is happening now?
On 30 June 2026, the Western Australian Government announced an Expression of Interest (EOI) for redevelopment proposals for the Sunset Heritage Precinct. It invited concepts covering the whole site, individual buildings or part of the site, and asked respondents to consider tenure, investment, design, development and conservation. The announcement confirms that proposals were being sought; it does not report an EOI outcome, a selected proponent or a construction timetable. Read the government announcement.
The EOI is a later process than the 2013 concept, not proof that the earlier gallery, café or function centre plan proceeded. The government’s Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk described the opportunity as a way to “unlock new economic, cultural, and community spaces for Western Australia.” That is the government’s rationale for seeking proposals, not evidence of a completed redevelopment.

What is the site, and can the public visit?
The government describes the precinct as 7.9 hectares on the Swan River in Dalkeith. The former hospital closed in 1995, and the site has remained largely unused since. Public access to the grounds opened in 2016; landscaping and barbecue and picnic facilities were added in 2019 to encourage community use. Access to the grounds does not mean every heritage building is open to visitors. The 2026 announcement gives the current site context.
Why does the site have heritage status?
The complex began as the Claremont Old Men’s Home, built in 1904. It was renamed Sunset Hospital in 1943 and entered on the State Register of Heritage Places in 1997. The government’s 2013 announcement described it as vacant since its decommissioning in 1995 and outlined possible future uses, including a gallery, café and function centre. The Sunset Heritage Precinct Management Plan describes the buildings and open spaces as significant as an early twentieth-century public health facility and historic precinct. It envisions a government-owned place for arts, culture and community use, with heritage conservation, public access and engagement with the river. Its stated reserve area is 7.9693 hectares; the government’s 2026 announcement rounds the precinct to 7.9 hectares. Read the Sunset Heritage Precinct Management Plan.

What does the management plan envision?
The plan outlines a long-term concept, not a record of completed works. Its proposed features include restored buildings occupied by tenants, improved site access and parking, landscaping and an amphitheatre. It also frames the precinct’s purpose as arts, cultural, community and ancillary commercial uses. Whether and how those elements proceed depends on redevelopment decisions; the 2026 EOI announcement does not confirm their delivery.
