To draw a cute cartoon butterfly that looks airborne, start with a small body and two pairs of rounded wings, then tilt the body and vary the wings’ angles. A few bold spots, curved antennae and a dotted flight trail make the pose lively without requiring detailed realism.

What you’ll need

  • Paper and a pencil
  • An eraser
  • Colored pencils or another coloring medium

For a friendly cartoon, use a simple outline and a limited palette. If you want a particular real butterfly rather than an invented design, use reference images: the American Museum of Natural History’s monarch drawing guide recommends studying different views and poses, including the body shape, wing patterns, veins and eyes. See the AMNH monarch drawing guide.

How to draw a cute flying butterfly

  1. Sketch the body. Draw a small upright oval or narrow, gently tapered shape. Add a round head at the top. Keep the body compact so the wings remain the focus.
  2. Add the antennae. Draw two curved lines rising from the head, each ending in a small rounded tip. Butterfly antennae have a bulb at the end; the AMNH notes this feature in its monarch drawing guide.
  3. Draw the upper wings. Place one larger wing on each side of the body. Use soft, rounded curves rather than perfect matching shapes; slight differences make the pose feel less static.
  4. Add the lower wings. Draw a smaller rounded or scalloped wing beneath each upper one. Leave a narrow gap at the body so the four wings read clearly as two pairs.
  5. Give the butterfly a flying pose. Tilt the body diagonally, then angle one wing pair higher or partly closed. Add a short curved trail of dots or a couple of small motion marks nearby. These are illustration choices for suggesting movement, not rules about how a butterfly must look.
  6. Choose a few markings. Add bold spots, bands or simple shapes inside the wings. Butterfly wing colors and patterns are formed by tiny scales, so a few stylized marks are enough for a cartoon. If you are drawing a real species, follow the placement and colors in your reference instead of treating monarch markings as universal.
  7. Finish the expression and color. Add simple eyes and, if you like, a tiny smile. Trace the final outline, erase extra construction lines and fill the wings with a small palette. A darker outline can help the butterfly stand out from the page.

Choose a look: graphic cartoon or nature-inspired

Choice Graphic cartoon Nature-inspired drawing
Wing detail A few large spots or shapes Pattern placement and veins observed in a reference
Pose Angled or asymmetrical wings for a lively feel Study several reference poses before choosing an open or partly closed position
Color Any limited palette that suits the character Use the colors of the selected butterfly; do not assume every butterfly resembles a monarch

Some butterflies have differently colored upper and lower wing surfaces. The Natural History Museum describes how a Blue Morpho can flash bright upper-wing color when disturbed, while muted undersides can help it blend in at rest. That contrast can inspire a drawing with one wing open and the other partly closed. Read the museum’s Flash and Dazzle activity.

Optional: make a flapping paper butterfly

Turn the drawing into a simple moving craft using paper, two straws, scissors, tape, glue and coloring materials. The Natural History Museum’s activity uses one straw that is slightly thicker and shorter than the other, and pairs a muted underside with a bright upper side to echo the Blue Morpho example.
