Start with your child’s school or district calendar and current instructions: first-day timing, registration and health forms, transportation, and the teacher’s supply list. There is no single U.S. first-day date or universal supply list, so confirm local requirements before making plans or purchases.
Confirm the calendar, schedule, and required paperwork
Check the current school-year calendar and verify the first day, arrival and dismissal times, and any grade-specific instructions with your school. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends confirming when school starts and what time students should arrive; its checklist was last updated August 26, 2026. AAP back-to-school checklist
Complete registration and any requested health or school forms by the school’s deadlines. Requirements differ by location, school, and student. Ask the school which records it needs and whether anything must be renewed or submitted before the first day.

Use your own district’s calendar and guidance rather than borrowing another district’s dates or policies.

Sort out health and medication arrangements
Ask the school which immunization records and health forms are required, where to send them, and whom to contact with questions. The AAP checklist says all 50 states require certain vaccines before school enrollment; the specific requirements and documentation should be confirmed with the school or relevant local health authority. For questions about your child’s medical care or immunizations, consult the child’s clinician.
If your child needs medication during the school day, contact the school early to learn its paperwork, delivery, storage, and administration procedures. Do not assume a medicine can be sent in a backpack or kept with the student; follow the school’s policy and coordinate with the clinician as needed.

Make a transportation and after-school plan
Decide how your child will get to school and return home, then check that the plan fits the school’s actual start and dismissal times. Confirm eligibility, route and timing, supervision, accessibility needs, and local availability for any bus or other district service. The AAP recommends asking directly how a child will get to school; NYC and DC checklists illustrate local processes, not services available everywhere.
Before the first day, make sure your child knows who will meet them or where they should go after dismissal. Agree on what to do if the usual pickup person is late or plans change, and ensure the school has current authorized-pickup information.

Shop from the current school list
Use the current teacher or school list as your shopping guide. The AAP names pencils, paper, and notebooks as examples, but schools may specify different items by grade or classroom. NYC Public Schools advises families to follow their school’s or teacher’s list and label belongings.
- Check whether the school allows a refillable water bottle and whether any particular items must stay at home.
- Choose a backpack or other carrier that fits the child and the materials they actually need to bring. Consider fit, ease of carrying and cleaning, durability, and total cost rather than assuming one model is right for everyone.

- Before buying a school backpack or other supplies, check the school’s storage rules and list so you do not purchase items the student cannot use or does not need.
Practice the routine and reset sleep
A few days before classes begin, practice the expected morning routine: getting up, dressing, eating, gathering supplies, and leaving with enough time for the planned trip. NYC Public Schools recommends setting a consistent bedtime and practicing the morning routine before school starts. Keep the practice realistic for your family. If the child will use a different route, meet a new caregiver, or attend an after-school program, walk through those steps too. Knowing the sequence ahead of time can make the first mornings easier to manage.
Update contacts and review emergency plans
Make sure the school has current phone numbers, email addresses, emergency contacts, and pickup permissions. Ask how the school sends urgent notifications, where caregivers should go for reunification, and how essential medication or supplies are handled during an emergency.

The CDC’s Office of Readiness and Response states, “Emergencies are chaotic.” Its December 16, 2025, guidance recommends keeping a child contact card with identifying and medical details and caregiver contacts. CDC: Keeping Children Safe Away from Home
Know what happens if school closes
If your school may shift to remote learning during a closure, check the district’s instructions before they are needed. Confirm which device the student should use, how to access the required account or learning platform, and where to find the school’s closure announcements. Device access and rules are local; for example, NYC Public Schools’ checklist describes New York State device restrictions for NYCPS students and directs families to their own school’s storage policy.
