Genderless fashion does not mean dressing everyone in the same neutral uniform. Indian designers are challenging the assumptions built into clothing through fluid draping, relaxed silhouettes, unconventional tailoring and garments made to a wearer’s measurements. Their work ranges from expressive statement pieces to everyday separates—but a gender-neutral label alone does not guarantee inclusive sizing or easy access.
What does genderless fashion mean?
“Genderless” or “gender-fluid” fashion describes approaches that loosen the usual divisions between menswear and womenswear. It is not one particular look: a garment may be sharply tailored, oversized, draped or richly decorative. The point is to give designers and wearers more room to decide how clothes are made and worn, rather than treating gender categories as fixed instructions.
#1 Best Overall
- Versatile Design: Three sleep gowns, featuring a mix of pull-over shoulder and button-down neck styles for easy dressing and undressing
- Neutral Color Palette: Soft, neutral colors that are perfect for any baby, ensuring a stylish and timeless look suitable for both boys and girls
- Comfortable Fit: Elastic at the leg closure, these gowns provide a snug fit around the legs, ensuring that your baby's legs stay warm and cozy throughout the night
- Easy Care: Machine washable and durable, these sleep gowns retain their shape and softness after multiple washes, making them convenient for busy parents
- Perfect for Layering: Ideal for layering under swaddles or blankets, allowing for versatility in various temperatures and sleeping environments
That can mean changing the garment itself, not just asking someone to style a conventionally gendered piece differently. In a 2018 Scroll.in feature, designer Alan Alexander Kaleekal described gender coding as something that can enter at every stage of creation, from colour and fabric to tailoring and button placement. His reconstructed shirt did away with conventional darts and contouring as well as gender-coded button placement. The label also used craft and handloom in its work.
Removing one familiar design cue does not automatically make a garment fit every body. It does, however, show how decisions that can seem purely technical also reflect ideas about whose bodies clothes are expected to fit.

How Indian designers approach the idea
The examples in the reporting show a range of design languages and aims, not a single movement uniform. These profiles are snapshots of particular designers and labels at the time of publication, not a directory of current collections or proof of what is in stock now.
| Designer or label | Approach described in the reporting | Cultural or practical focus |
|---|---|---|
| Alan Alexander Kaleekal | Reconstructed tailoring, including a shirt without conventional darts or contouring | Questioning gender codes embedded in construction; craft and handloom |
| Two Point Two | Clothing not divided into menswear and womenswear; work described as including expressive, draped and baggy forms | Founder Anvita Sharma framed clothing as a medium for social change |
| Anaam | Drapes and garments drawing on Indian references | Founder Sumiran Kabir Sharma cited mythology, history and culture as inspiration |
| BOBO Calcutta | Expressive and decorative garments in the Scroll.in feature | Illustrates that fluid fashion need not be visually understated |
| The Pot Plant | Varied silhouettes, with the wearer’s choice foregrounded | Designer Sanya Suri said clothing had never been about gender for the label |
| Aayka Fashion | Custom-tailored pieces made to wearer measurements | Vogue India reported a collaboration serving transmasculine and masc-presenting customers |
The table draws on the dated coverage of Alan Alexander Kaleekal, Two Point Two and BOBO Calcutta, Two Point Two and Anaam, and The Pot Plant and Aayka Fashion. The reporting does not establish a systematic comparison of their current prices, size ranges, availability or customer outcomes.

Other labels named in later coverage include Violet India, HUEMN, Karu Research, 11.11/eleven eleven and Bloni. An Outlook Luxe overview from June 2026 offers additional examples, but a mention in a profile is not evidence that a particular item is currently available or offered in every size.
Why Indian references matter—and what they do not prove
Draping and familiar garment forms offer designers ways to explore silhouettes beyond a strict menswear-womenswear split. The 2022 New Indian Express report notes the kurta-pyjama as a traditional form worn across gender lines, and Anaam’s Sumiran Kabir Sharma spoke about drawing on drapes, Indian mythology, history and culture.

A design described as genderless may still be cut around assumptions about body shape, and customers may not be able to find it in a usable size. In the Scroll.in feature, stylist Kshitij Kankaria observed that women’s clothes can sit tighter on a man’s body and may not be available in men’s sizes. This is an attributed observation, not a universal account of how every person experiences fit.

Custom tailoring is one response. Vogue India reported that Aayka Fashion collaborated on pieces tailored to individual measurements for transmasculine and masc-presenting customers. That example points to the practical value of asking whose measurements a pattern assumes, and whether a label offers made-to-measure options. It does not mean every trans or gender-nonconforming person has the same fit needs.
- Look beyond the label: Check a garment’s actual measurements and cut rather than assuming “unisex” means it will fit your body.
- Ask about construction: Darts, contouring, closures and intended ease can affect how a piece sits, even when its styling is fluid.
- Check tailoring options: If a brand offers custom work, confirm which measurements it uses and what alterations are possible.
What this shift changes
Genderless fashion is most useful as an invitation to question the rules clothing is expected to follow—not as a promise that gender no longer shapes how clothes are designed, sold or worn. The designers profiled here approach that question differently: some rethink tailoring, some foreground drape and cultural reference, and some make wearer choice or custom fit part of the conversation. Their examples show possibilities, while the reported barriers around fit and availability underline how much depends on the garment and the person wearing it.
