Jogi art is a folk drawing practice associated with the Jogi family of Rajasthan and neighbouring Gujarat. A 2016 account by Scroll.in traces its beginnings to travelling bards Ganesh and Teju Jogi, who began drawing the stories they sang after artist and cultural anthropologist Haku Shah encouraged them. The form grew from pen-and-paper drawings into work using colour and varied supports, with subjects spanning folklore and rural life as well as contemporary scenes.
How Jogi art began
Scroll.in’s August 7, 2016 article by Zinnia Ray Chaudhuri presents the origin as a story rooted in performance. Ganesh and Teju Jogi travelled as bards, singing traditional devotional folk songs. Artist and cultural anthropologist Haku Shah encouraged them to draw the stories they narrated in song. The account says the resulting form came to be named after the couple. This is the origin story reported in that article; it does not establish an independently corroborated chronology.
Tulika Kedia, curator of a Jogi-family exhibition in Thimphu and author of a book on the art form, described it this way: “Jogi art is an expression of a family’s unique exploration of their lives in a visual form.”

Why it is associated with one family
The 2016 article reports that the couple’s six children and their spouses exhibited work with them, and that relatives who married into the family also took up the genre. It called the Jogi family the only clan exclusively practising the form at the time. That wording describes the article’s 2016 report, not a verified account of who practises Jogi art today.
Kedia identified Rajasthan and neighbouring Gujarat as the form’s geographic home, while noting that its themes extend beyond those regional boundaries. The family connection is central to the account, but it does not mean every subject depicted is limited to local life.

Materials and visual approach
The artists initially drew with ballpoint pen on paper. The article describes their work as relying on defined pen strokes and fine detail. Teju Jogi is credited with first introducing colour; the couple later experimented with cloth and canvas, as well as acrylic paints and watercolours.
This shift is a development in materials, not a ranking of techniques. Pen and paper are the starting point in the reported account; colour and other supports broadened the ways the family could make the work.

From folk stories to contemporary scenes
Early subjects reflected the Jogis’ lives as travelling bards: folklore, songs, rural heritage and everyday experience. The account also describes village and city scenes, nature and animals, fashionable urban figures, and contemporary lifestyles. The subject matter therefore brings inherited stories and lived experience into the same broad practice, rather than confining Jogi art to illustrations of devotional songs.
Kedia summarized this mixture of continuity and change: “The balance of traditional themes and modern concerns marks Jogi art’s relevant role in today’s art milieu.”
Rank #4
Exhibitions and public visibility
The article records a Jogi-family exhibition at the Mountain Echoes festival in Thimphu, Bhutan, scheduled for August 25–28, 2016. It also reported that Rajasthan’s government had commissioned murals at Jaipur Railway Station and some bus stops in the period before publication. These are historical examples of public visibility; the article does not establish current exhibitions, commissions, sales, or representation.
Trying the materials yourself
Ballpoint pens and drawing paper are materials named in the account of the artists’ early work. They are reasonable general supplies for making detailed drawings, but the source does not say that using them alone teaches Jogi art, nor does it endorse a particular brand or method. The family’s later experiments with colour and supports also show that the practice cannot be reduced to a single material recipe.
