Western India’s Ragamala Paintings Turn Music into Images

Ragamala paintings translate musical modes into scenes of figures, settings and emotion. Rajasthan’s surviving folios show how artists made sound visible in distinct regional styles.

A Ragamala painting makes a musical mode visible: figures, gestures, architecture and landscape suggest the mood of a raga. Rajasthan’s court paintings offer striking examples, from a Jaipur woman on a palace terrace to musicians pictured in Bundi and Bikaner. Together, they show how Indian painters brought music, poetry and visual storytelling into a single frame.

What does Ragamala mean?

“Ragamala” means “garland of ragas.” The Metropolitan Museum of Art defines it this way: “A ragamala, translated from Sanskrit as ‘garland of ragas,’ is a series of paintings depicting a range of musical melodies known as ragas.” In its account, painting, poetry and music meet in Indian court art.

A Ragamala is not simply a picture of a performance. It gives a musical mode a visual setting and emotional character. Love and its many moods recur across the genre, but individual paintings vary: a scene may center on a solitary figure, a couple, a ruler or musicians, among other subjects.

The Met traces Ragamala’s musical and textual ancestry to the fifth- to seventh-century Brihaddeshi treatise, while saying the painting genre was first identified as such in the second half of the fifteenth century. These are distinct milestones: an earlier foundation in musical thought, followed centuries later by the emergence of Ragamala as a recognizable kind of painting.

How do Ragamala paintings show music?

A raga is a musical mode understood through its characteristic mood and associations. A painting cannot reproduce the sound, so it makes those associations legible through a scene: who is present, what they are doing, where they are, and what the surrounding landscape or architecture contributes.

The Met’s overview connects ragas with rasa, or emotional flavor, and describes love as a unifying subject. It also associates modes with six seasons—summer, monsoon, autumn, early winter, winter and spring—and with times of day such as dawn, dusk and night. These associations help explain why a Ragamala image can feel like more than an illustration: its setting and action carry part of the mode’s meaning.

What is the difference between a raga and a ragini?

In the Met’s general account, a raga is often represented as a male protagonist and a ragini as a female one. This is a convention described for the tradition, not a rule that identifies every figure in every painting. Labels, inscriptions and catalogue records can be important evidence when assigning a specific musical identity.

How were Ragamala paintings made and viewed?

Many Ragamala works were made as loose-leaf paintings, kept together in a portfolio and circulated among inner court circles. The Met reports that sets commonly contained thirty-six or forty-two leaves; these are typical groupings, not a required count for every series. Ragamala imagery also appeared in palace murals, though the Museum notes that few survive.

Individual leaves could later become separated from their original series. As a result, a surviving page may retain a regional attribution or a broad Ragamala identification even when its particular raga is unknown. The Marwar example below illustrates why it is safer to follow a catalogue’s wording than to infer a title from the image alone.

What Rajasthan examples reveal about regional variation

These selected records show how artists across Rajasthan translated musical themes into different figures, settings and visual treatments. They are examples, not a complete survey of western Indian Ragamala painting.

Region and work Date and material What the catalogue records
Jaipur, Maru Ragini 1710–1715 CE; natural colour on paper The National Museum identifies the style as Jaipur. A protagonist stands on a palace terrace with an attendant; a friend carries a garland. A label appears at the top.
Mewar, page from a dispersed Ragamala series Ca. 1710; ink and opaque watercolor on paper The Met records the page as Mewar and as part of a dispersed series.
Marwar, Ladies in a Pavilion, page from a dispersed Ragamala series Ca. 1640–50; medium not stated in the cited Met record The Met identifies it as an unidentified Ragamala page. Its curator notes saturated red and orange earth tones and relationships to Mughal forms and earlier Rajput styles.
Bundi, Shri Raga, folio from a Ragamala series Mid-seventeenth century; medium not stated in the cited Met record A ruler plays the rudra vina with two musicians. The Met points to the architectural setting and flowering tree as characteristic of Bundi painting and connects the scene with fall harvest festivities.
Bikaner, Panchama Ragini, page from a Ragamala series Ca. 1640; medium not stated in the cited Met record A patron pays two musicians. The Met describes the image as giving form to a melody and mood, and notes Mughal workshop influence in its treatment of figures and nature.

Jaipur: a label and a palace terrace

The National Museum’s Maru Ragini offers a useful close reading. Its catalogue places a protagonist on a palace terrace, attended by a companion, while another friend brings a garland. The label at the top helps identify the page; the figures and setting turn that named musical subject into a social scene. The record dates the paper painting to 1710–1715 CE and describes its medium as natural colour on paper.

Mewar and Marwar: identified style, uncertain subject

The Mewar page is dated to around 1710 and made with ink and opaque watercolor on paper. By contrast, the Met catalogue calls the Marwar work an unidentified Ragamala page, even though its regional attribution and broad stylistic relationships are described. That distinction matters: a painting can be recognized as belonging to a Ragamala series without its specific raga being securely known.

Bundi and Bikaner: musicians, setting and exchange

In the Bundi Shri Raga folio, the ruler’s rudra vina performance is accompanied by two musicians. The flowering tree and architecture help situate the scene in Bundi’s visual language, while the catalogue connects it to fall harvest festivities. In the Bikaner Panchama Ragini, the action is different: a patron pays two musicians. The Met also notes Mughal workshop influence in the handling of figures and nature. The example shows that regional styles were not sealed off from artistic exchange.

How to look at a Ragamala folio

  1. Read the label or inscription. It may name the raga or ragini, as the label does in the Jaipur record, but do not assume every folio is identified.
  2. Notice the action. Ask whether the scene shows a performance, a meeting, a solitary figure or another event; the action is one way the image gives a mode its character.
  3. Read the setting. Architecture, plants and landscape may point to a season, time or regional visual style.
  4. Check the material and catalogue description. Records can establish a page’s medium, date and regional attribution while leaving its specific musical identity uncertain.

Ragamala painting was not confined to Rajasthan. The National Museum’s Nauras exhibition page also discusses Deccani developments in music and art and lists early Ragamala leaves in the Deccan context. Rajasthan’s examples are therefore one regional chapter in a wider Indian tradition.
