Period Matters: Menstruation in South Asia is a 2022 anthology edited by Farah Ahamed and published by Pan Macmillan. It brings together essays, stories, interviews, poetry and visual art to examine how menstruation is experienced and represented across different communities. Art is not an add-on: photography, painting, embroidery, murals and dance sit alongside written accounts, making the collection especially relevant to readers interested in how artists give form to a subject often shaped by stigma and silence.
What is Period Matters: Menstruation in South Asia?
It is an edited, multi-genre collection, not a single-author argument, clinical guide or comprehensive survey of every South Asian experience. Pan Macmillan published the book in 2022; the official book site gives 28 June 2022 as its publication date. The publisher presents it as an anthology about diverse experiences of menstruation in South Asia, a description that signals its scope rather than a claim that any one contributor speaks for the region.
The book combines personal and reported writing with creative work. Its contributors include policymakers, entrepreneurs, artists, academics and activists, as well as people whose experiences are often absent from mainstream accounts. The publisher’s overview describes contributions about a menstrual-health workshop in Balochistan by Granaz Baloch and advocacy for menstrual dignity as a human right in Nepal by Radha Paudel. Pan Macmillan’s book page and the official book website list further information about the anthology and available editions.

How the anthology approaches menstruation
Rather than treating menstruation only as a bodily process, the collection places it in social and cultural contexts: who can speak about it, how people learn about it, what practices surround it, and how dignity is affected by social position. The official About page points to subjects including stigma and caste, trans experiences, Buddhist nuns in Bhutan, menstrual literacy, period-tracking apps and biodegradable-pad innovation.
These are examples of the anthology’s range, not evidence that a particular practice or experience is universal. The book’s subjects also include people living with disabilities, people experiencing homelessness and people in prison. Taken together, the subjects show how a discussion of menstruation can intersect with religion, gender identity, class, poverty and access to information without collapsing those distinct experiences into one story.

Why art matters in the book
For a painting-focused reader, the visual work offers another way into the subject. The official site describes photography, painting, embroidery and murals, alongside dance; its list of artists includes Rupi Kaur, Anish Kapoor, Lyla Freechild, Shahzia Sikander and Sarah Naqvi. The collection uses the term “menstrala” for art inspired by menstruation. Here, art can make bodily experience visible, challenge the shame attached to it, or communicate through image and movement where conventional public discussion may fall short.
The range of forms matters. A written essay can explain a social context, while an image or performance can convey gesture, presence and feeling differently. The anthology brings these modes together rather than asking visual art to illustrate a single thesis. Its art should therefore be read as part of the book’s inquiry into representation, not as decoration around the prose.
Who may find the collection useful?
Period Matters may suit readers looking for literary and artistic perspectives on menstruation, including educators, artists and people interested in South Asian cultural life. It is not presented as a medical reference or a step-by-step menstrual-health manual. Readers seeking one should use a suitable health source alongside, rather than instead of, this anthology.
The official site lists paperback and Kindle editions and gives ISBN-10 9389104475 and ISBN-13 978-9389104479. Edition availability can vary by retailer and territory, so check the listing for the format you want. No page count is given here because listings differ by edition.
