You can turn leaves into art by pressing them for a framed display, arranging thin leaves and flowers into a collage or mandala, or slowly removing a leaf’s soft tissue to reveal its veins. For a quicker project, choose collage or pressed-leaf art; leaf skeletons take weeks and need gentle handling.

How to press leaves for art

Pressing is a good choice when you want to keep a leaf’s outline and color in a flat form. The Natural History Museum, London, suggests pressed plants for framed pictures, cards, bookmarks, and collections mounted on card. A book and absorbent paper are enough for a small project; a plant press gives you more control when you plan to press many specimens.

Prepare and arrange the specimen

  1. Collect thoughtfully. Choose a place where gathering is permitted, take care not to damage plants, and avoid collecting more than you need. Fallen material is a practical option.
  2. Arrange it before pressing. Decide how you want the leaf or plant to look in the finished piece. Flatten folds and keep the parts you want visible in contact with the pressing surface; exposed sections can shrivel.
  3. Sandwich it in paper. Place the specimen between absorbent sheets. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney recommends absorbent, unprinted paper and says glossy paper is unsuitable for drying. Keep the specimen away from damp spots.
  4. Apply even, moderate pressure. Use a plant press or, for a small batch, place the paper sandwich inside a book and add weight. As botanist Fred Rumsey of the Natural History Museum puts it, “You want to ensure that you keep an even weight across the whole plant specimen that you’re pressing.”
  5. Check while it dries. Drying time varies with the plant and conditions. The Natural History Museum, London, gives a range from a couple of days to a few weeks; wait until the piece no longer feels damp before mounting it.
  6. Mount with care. Lift the dry specimen gently because it can be brittle. Attach it to card with a small amount of PVA glue, then add a label or use it in a card, bookmark, or picture.

Prevent dampness and mold

Pressure alone does not guarantee a good result. The Botanic Gardens of Sydney recommends airflow as well as moderate pressure, and warns that book pressing can allow mold to develop when air circulation is poor. For press layers using foam sheets, it advises changing the papers more frequently or circulating warm air. Avoid damp storage spots, and check the paper rather than assuming a thick book makes the process mold-proof.

Make a leaf collage or mandala

For an image you can compose directly on the page, arrange leaves and flowers into a picture, repeating pattern, or mandala, then glue them to drawing paper or cardstock. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County recommends healthy-looking material, preferably fallen, and notes that thin leaves and petals are easier to glue than succulent or woody material.

Materials and steps

  • Drawing paper or cardstock
  • Thin leaves and petals
  • Scissors, if you want to trim shapes
  • White glue, applied with a Q-tip or brush
  • A little water and a bowl for managing glue, if useful
  1. Arrange the plant material on the paper first, moving pieces until the composition looks balanced.
  2. Apply a small amount of white glue with a Q-tip or brush and press each piece into place.
  3. Let the collage dry flat before handling or adding details.

Pressed plants can also decorate notebooks and greeting cards. For that kind of project, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History lists paper, white glue, tweezers, a pen, and notecard or cardstock for labels among its project materials: Pressed Plant Projects.

Make a leaf skeleton

A leaf skeleton is a different, slower project: you soften the leaf tissue in water, then remove it gently until the veins remain. The Huntington recommends thick but non-succulent leaves, including magnolia, rhododendron, and oak. The method is delicate; it is not a shortcut for pressing an intact leaf.

  1. Choose a suitable leaf. Start with a thick, non-succulent leaf such as magnolia, rhododendron, or oak.
  2. Soak it. Leave it in water for 4–8 weeks, until the outer tissue loosens.
  3. Brush away the softened tissue. Use a toothbrush gently, stopping as the veins are exposed. Aggressive brushing can damage the fragile structure.
  4. Press the skeleton. Press it for at least two weeks to dry it flat.
  5. Choose whether to alter the color. Bleach for a pale appearance or dye for color are optional treatments, not required steps.

The Huntington says only adults should do the bleach step; children should not use bleach or dye without adult supervision. If you want a simple, chemical-free result, skip those optional treatments.

Use leaf texture as a drawing prompt

You can make leaf-inspired art without preserving or gluing a specimen. In frottage, place paper over a textured surface and rub it with a pencil or crayon to reveal the texture. MoMA describes Max Ernst using leaves and other textured materials this way in The Habit of Leaves, made around 1925 and published in 1926. Treat the rubbing as a starting image: combine textures, add lines, or develop the marks into a larger composition.
