Brand colors can influence how people perceive a business, but no hue carries a guaranteed meaning. The impression depends on the exact color, its surrounding design, the audience, and the product category. Choose colors to support your brand’s positioning, then test the palette with the people and in the settings that matter.
What colors can—and cannot—say about a brand
Color is one part of a brand identity system, alongside elements such as its name, typography, imagery, and tone of voice. Research suggests that color can affect perceptions of brand personality and evaluations. In four studies, Labrecque and Milne examined hue, saturation, and value in relation to brand personality, purchase intent, likability, and familiarity. The work supports color as an influence—not a formula that guarantees a particular response. Their peer-reviewed article was published online in 2011 and appeared in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science in 2012.
That is why familiar shorthand—such as “blue means trust”—is best treated as a starting hypothesis, not a universal rule. A marketing review by Labrecque, Patrick, and Milne describes color meaning as nuanced, including both embodied and referential associations. Culture, audience, category, and execution can all matter, and the sources do not establish one fixed color dictionary that applies to every business. The review appeared in Psychology & Marketing in 2013.

Balance category expectations with distinction
A color choice is seen in context: customers may compare it with what they already encounter in a product category. Labrecque and Milne studied color norms across 281 top brands in 15 product categories and 40 subcategories, asking whether differentiation from category norms is always beneficial. Those figures describe the scope of that study, not the current makeup of every market. Their 2013 study highlights a useful decision: a familiar category palette may help a brand feel legible, while a more distinctive palette may help it stand apart. Neither choice is automatically better.
How to choose colors for your brand
- Define the intended impression. Describe the brand’s positioning and the qualities you want the identity to support. Make these specific to your business rather than selecting colors from a generic personality chart.
- Look at the category. Review the visual conventions customers are likely to encounter. Decide where familiarity helps recognition and where a distinctive choice might better express your position.
- Build a working palette. Assign roles such as primary, supporting, and accent colors. Consider hue, saturation, and value together; a color’s impact can change with its intensity and lightness.
- Compare real applications. Put the options into the contexts where customers will see them: a logo, packaging, website, social media, and interface states. Judge each option for personality fit, category familiarity, distinctiveness, legibility, and reproduction across media.
- Test with the intended audience. Where feasible, show small samples or prototypes to people who resemble your audience. Compare options using the same questions and use cases instead of relying on assumptions about what a color “means.”
- Check accessibility in each use. Test the actual foreground and background pairings, and add labels, symbols, shapes, or another cue whenever color communicates information.
There is no evidence here that identifies a best palette for an unnamed organization. The decision should come from the brand’s positioning and category context, then be checked against audience response and practical use.

Check text contrast
For WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3, text generally needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. Check each actual text-and-background pairing in the design; a palette that looks cohesive in a swatch may not make every label readable. W3C’s contrast guidance explains the criterion and its exceptions.
A logo-text exemption in contrast guidance does not exempt nearby website copy, controls, or other interface text from the criteria that apply to those elements. Assess each element in its actual context. Section508.gov’s guidance on accessible color use also discusses practical considerations for using color.

Do not make color the only cue
W3C’s WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.1 states: “Color is not used as the only visual means of conveying information, indicating an action, prompting a response, or distinguishing a visual element.” W3C’s explanation of Use of Color gives the criterion in context. For example, pair a required-field color with a text label or symbol; do not rely on red alone to distinguish an error from a success state. The W3C tips for designing for web accessibility offer additional guidance.
