Use reference images to understand what you are painting—not as a blueprint to reproduce. Let them inform pose, form, proportion, light, value, edges and color, then adapt those details to your composition and intent. The practical tips below cover choosing sources, reading photographs critically, combining references and checking image-use rights.

Choose and organize references with a purpose

1. Decide what question you need answered

Before searching, name the problem: a hand’s foreshortening, a garment fold, a head angle, the way light falls across a face, or the colors in a landscape. A reference is most useful when you know what information you want from it. If you cannot say what it contributes, it may be distracting rather than helpful.

2. Give each image a specific job

Do not assume one photograph has to provide every answer. Illustrator Neil Davies describes using separate images for a face, lighting and color. You can do the same: choose one source for the expression, another for the light direction, and a third for the palette or setting. Keep track of each image’s role so features from unrelated scenes do not accidentally become one inconsistent blueprint. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images”.)

3. Choose the reference method that fits the subject

Work from life when you can arrange and observe the subject directly. Make your own photo when you need a specific pose, angle, lighting setup or prop that is difficult to find. A 3D pose reference can help you map body position, perspective and shadows. Existing images can offer access to subjects or settings beyond your reach, but their terms of use need checking. Every method gives you information to interpret; none makes artistic decisions for you.

Method Useful for What to watch
Observation from life Seeing the subject directly and arranging it to answer a visual question. You need access to the subject and a way to observe it from the angle or under the light you need.
Your own photograph Controlling pose, angle, clothing, props and, to some extent, light; a phone can be enough for a simple setup. A photo may introduce lens or perspective distortion and camera color shifts. If photographing yourself, hands-free support can be convenient but is optional.
Licensed or Open Access image Finding subjects, locations or visual details you cannot readily arrange yourself. Check the specific image’s license and permitted uses; an online image is not automatically free to reuse.
3D pose reference Understanding pose, perspective and possible shadow shapes. Use it as a structural aid rather than copying its output without considering the artwork.

4. Make your own reference when the available image is wrong

If no photograph shows the pose or prop you need, stage it yourself. Creative Bloq describes illustrator Kelley McMorris using clothing, household props and a phone to make reference images. A quick, imperfect photo that answers a particular question can be more useful than a polished image that leads the painting in the wrong direction. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images”.)

Translate the image instead of copying it

5. Use the reference as information, not a template

A pose or perspective that looks natural in a photograph may feel stiff in a drawing or painting. Kelley McMorris advises artists to modify a reference to serve the artwork rather than make the artwork serve the reference. Adjust a gesture, turn a form, simplify a shape or move an element when that makes the composition clearer or more convincing. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images”.)

6. Understand the form behind the visible marks

Look for the volumes that explain the image: the direction of a torso, the planes of a cheek, the structure beneath a sleeve. Concept artist and illustrator Suzanne Helmigh puts it this way: “The key is to understand what you’re looking at and not simply draw what you think you see.” Her account of teaching portrait painting emphasizes understanding the skull and facial muscles to better grasp volume and proportion. The same principle applies beyond portraits: identify the underlying structure before rendering surface detail. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images”.)

7. Look for cues that communicate character

Small decisions in a reference—posture, tilt, weight distribution or a particular gesture—can help suggest a subject’s character. Artist Samuel Read describes learning from varied photographs as well as drawing from life to understand how visual cues communicate qualities. Treat those cues as possibilities to interpret, not fixed symbols: a single pose does not dictate one personality or story. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images”.)

8. Decide whether a photograph is the right source at all

A photo freezes one moment and one viewpoint. If a key shape is obscured, the light is unreadable or the camera angle makes a form misleading, observe the subject from life or gather another image. You can also make a small study to test a shape or color before committing to the main work. Art instructor Jonathan Hardesty’s guidance stresses that photographs provide useful information, but need not be copied pixel for pixel. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images,” page two.)

Read photographs critically

9. Check perspective and lens effects

Notice whether a close object looks unusually large, a body part is stretched near the edge of the frame, or an angle makes the pose feel awkward. Forced perspective, unusual camera angles and heavy lens distortion can all affect how a subject appears. Decide whether to preserve that effect, correct it, or use another source. A photographic distortion is part of the image, not necessarily part of the form you want in the painting. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images,” page two.)

10. Identify the light before relying on the shadows

Ask where the light comes from and whether the shadows explain the structure. Some fashion photographs deliberately reduce face shadows, which can make them less informative for understanding facial planes. This is not a defect in every fashion image; it is a reason to check whether that particular photograph contains the lighting information your painting needs. If it does not, find another reference or observe the subject under clearer light. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images,” page two.)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Choose edges rather than inheriting every transition

A camera can make transitions between values look harder than you want them to appear in paint. Separate the edges you need to describe the form from incidental sharp boundaries in the photograph. Soften, lose or sharpen edges according to the focal point and the effect you want; the image’s edge pattern is evidence to assess, not a rule to follow. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images,” page two.)

12. Treat photographed color as a clue, not a guarantee

Camera white balance can shift color, and a photograph may not reproduce the colors you see in person. When color matters, compare more than one image, observe the subject directly if possible, or make a separate color study. Decide on the painting’s color relationships deliberately instead of assuming the photograph records them exactly. (Creative Bloq, “13 essential tips for using reference images,” page two.)

Check permission as well as artistic intent

13. Confirm that you may use the image

Being able to view or download a photograph does not mean you have permission to reproduce, adapt or display it in your artwork. In the United States, the Copyright Office explains that original photographs and visual art may be protected by copyright, with owners generally controlling uses such as reproduction, adaptation, distribution and public display, subject to statutory limitations and exceptions. Fair use is a fact-specific legal question, not an automatic result of changing an image; rules also vary by jurisdiction. Check the image’s license for your intended use, request permission when needed, or make your own reference. (U.S. Copyright Office, “What Is Copyright?”.)

Credit is good practice and may be required by a license, but attribution alone does not grant permission. The National Art Education Association encourages educators and learners to credit sources and follow copyright and Creative Commons rules; its position statement is educational guidance, not legal advice. (National Art Education Association, “Position Statement on Copyright and Creativity”.)

For one clearly defined example of reusable imagery, The Met says that images carrying its Open Access (OA) designation may be used for commercial or noncommercial purposes without permission or charge. Attribution is not required for those designated images, though the museum hopes users cite the work; credit-line information appears on the collection page, and manipulation is permitted to further a project’s ideas. Check the OA marker on the specific image: the terms described here do not apply automatically to every image in the collection. (The Met, “Open Access”.)

A practical reference workflow

  1. State the visual problem. Write down what you need to understand—such as pose, proportion, light direction or color—before selecting images.
  2. Choose the source. Observe from life, make a photo, use a suitable 3D pose reference, or find an image whose terms permit your intended use.
  3. Assign each source a role. Note what each image contributes, such as facial structure, lighting or palette, rather than treating any one source as a complete plan.
  4. Inspect the image. Check its viewpoint, lens effects, light and shadows, edges, color shifts and any parts that do not show the structure you need.
  5. Make the artwork’s decisions. Adjust pose, proportion, shapes, edges and color to support the composition and intent. Do not reproduce incidental photographic effects just because they are visible.
  6. Verify the terms before sharing or selling. Read the license or request permission as appropriate; keep attribution details if required or useful.
