Sherwin-Williams marked the opening of its expanded architectural paint and coatings plant in Statesville, North Carolina, on September 30, 2026. The company says the site is now its largest plant in North America. The completed work includes nearly 50,000 square feet of improvements, more production space, automation enhancements and four new rail spurs.
What Sherwin-Williams added in Statesville
The expansion combines manufacturing and transportation upgrades intended to help the facility handle materials and move finished products through Sherwin-Williams’ supply network. The company says the changes improve material handling, production flexibility and product movement, but it has not reported measured gains in output, cost or delivery time.
- Nearly 50,000 square feet of improvements: Sherwin-Williams’ September 2026 announcement describes this total but does not give a complete as-built footprint for the whole site.
- Expanded production space and automation: The company says these additions give the facility more flexibility and efficiency. It has not quantified the added manufacturing capacity.
- Four new rail spurs and related infrastructure: The rail work adds another way to move materials and products through the site and supply network.
Sherwin-Williams Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer Heidi Petz said the expanded space, rail infrastructure and automation provide greater flexibility and efficiency in manufacturing and moving products across the company’s global supply network. That is the company’s stated rationale, not a published measurement of the project’s results. Sherwin-Williams’ opening announcement also identifies the plant as its largest in North America; it does not state the facility’s total area.

The ribbon-cutting completes a project Sherwin-Williams announced in 2022. The earlier announcement described a 36,000-square-foot manufacturing extension, four rail spurs, and a separate 800,000-square-foot distribution and fleet transportation center. The 2026 opening release refers to a nearby distribution service center but does not reconcile the earlier planned dimensions with the completed construction. Those figures describe the announced plan, not a confirmed as-built tally.

The 2022 project announcements also set investment and job targets. They should not be read as final cost or confirmed employment:

What is known about public incentives
Sherwin-Williams’ 2022 announcement put state, county and local incentives at approximately $30 million. Separately, North Carolina described a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) authorization of up to $2,723,250 over 12 years, subject to verified performance, and $907,750 allocated to the Industrial Development Fund Utility Account. These are announced or authorized support figures, not evidence that the full amounts were paid. The 2026 opening announcement confirms approved incentives but does not update their totals or report payments. Sherwin-Williams’ 2022 project announcement and the North Carolina announcement describe the earlier figures.

What the opening announcement does not establish
The completion announcement does not provide the final project cost, the number of jobs actually filled, current plant output, added annual capacity, measured logistics savings or actual incentive payments. It also does not state the total area of the manufacturing facility. The company’s “largest plant in North America” description is a ranking, not a square-footage figure.
