You can make a simple clothing label at home by stamping fabric or ribbon with fabric ink, then sewing it into the garment. Treat that as a decorative maker label—not as a substitute for any care, fiber-content, origin, or business-identity information required when selling covered clothing.
What you need
- A small piece of fabric, ribbon, or fabric tape for the label base.
- A stamp with your name, initials, or design. Alphabet stamps let you arrange a short maker name; a carved stamp is another option.
- Fabric ink suitable for the material.
- Needle and thread, or a sewing machine, to attach the finished label.
- A scrap of the same or similar material for testing.
Sewists have described stamping fabric or ribbon with fabric ink and sewing the result into a garment as a home-label method; this is a practical idea, not a tested durability standard (sewing-community discussion).
How to make and attach a stamped label
- Choose a base. Cut a small piece of scrap fabric or ribbon to the size and shape you want. Consider whether the edges need folding under to prevent fraying.
- Plan the design. Keep the maker name or mark short enough to remain clear on the available space. If you also need required disclosures for a garment you will sell, plan those separately and make sure they remain legible.
- Test the ink. Stamp the same or a similar material before using the finished label. Follow the ink maker’s directions, including any curing or heat-setting step. The community method does not establish how well a particular ink survives laundering, so do not assume wash durability without testing.
- Stamp the label. Apply the design according to the ink instructions and allow it to dry or cure as directed.
- Sew it in. Attach the label to a seam allowance or another suitable location. Choose a placement that is comfortable to wear and does not hide information that must remain visible or accessible.
Decorative labels and U.S. selling requirements are different
A personal maker mark does not automatically meet U.S. labeling rules. The FTC says most covered clothing and household textile products need fiber-content information, country of origin, and the identity of the manufacturer or another responsible business. Covered apparel also has care-label requirements. Coverage and exceptions depend on the product, so these general points are not a full compliance determination.

Care instructions
Under the FTC’s Care Labeling Rule, manufacturers and importers of covered apparel must provide care instructions; the rule also reaches people or organizations that direct or control manufacture or import. Care labels must be attached permanently and securely and remain legible for the garment’s useful life. Instructions generally need to state washing or drycleaning guidance, and warnings about procedures that could damage the garment must have a reasonable basis. Do not copy generic directions or use “Dryclean Only” unless you have a basis for saying washing would damage the item. See the FTC’s care-labeling guidance and the codified rule, 16 CFR Part 423.

Fiber, origin, and responsible-business identity
The FTC’s textile guidance says required information may be placed on one label or divided among labels, provided the required content is legible, conspicuous, and readily accessible. For a garment with a neck, country-of-origin information must be on a label inside the center of the neck. Fiber content and responsible-business identity may appear there or on another conspicuous, accessible label. Some required information may appear on the reverse of a label only when that side remains accessible. Read the FTC’s textile and wool labeling guidance.
These are U.S.-specific general points, not a complete product-by-product review. Sellers should check current FTC materials and relevant Customs requirements for the actual product and supply chain. Rules in other countries require separate guidance.
