To make a plastic mosaic, arrange plastic tiles or clean reused plastic pieces on a sturdy, flat base, then attach them with an adhesive compatible with both the plastic and the base. Plan the design before gluing; grout is an optional finish, not a requirement for every small decorative project.

Choose your plastic pieces and plan the design

Ready-made plastic mosaic tiles offer consistent shapes and sizes. For a bolder design with larger pieces, clean bottle lids or tops can be reused instead. You can also combine plastic pieces with other materials, as shown in the V&A’s guidance on planning with recycled materials.

Sketch the composition, then lay out the pieces on the base before attaching anything. This lets you check spacing, colors, and whether the design fits. If you are making a bottle-lid mosaic with a group, follow the Scouts UK activity’s safety checklist.

Select a base and adhesive that match the project

For an indoor decorative piece

Use a sturdy, smooth, flat base that will not bend. The Museum of Fine Arts Boston lists wood, plexiglass, glass, and terra-cotta as possible bases for its activity. Its instructions call for a multi-surface adhesive and note that Weldbond is best for mosaics used indoors only. These are source-specific recommendations; confirm that any adhesive you choose is suitable for your particular plastic and base.

For an outdoor installation

Do not assume an adhesive suitable indoors will withstand outdoor conditions. Cornell Garden-Based Learning says adhesive choice depends on the base material and states in its “Mosaic Making” resource: “For a plastic or metal base, use exterior tile adhesive.” That guidance should still be checked against the exact plastic, base, and intended exposure. Cornell also recommends water- and frost-resistant cement and grout for outdoor mosaics.

Attach the pieces

  1. Make sure the base and plastic pieces are clean and dry, and put your completed layout beside the work area so you can follow it.

Decide whether to grout

Grout fills gaps and changes the surface’s appearance, but it is not essential to describe every small project as a grouted mosaic. If you want a grout finish, first check that the grout is suitable for the plastic pieces and base. Salford Museums’ general classroom mosaic activity demonstrates spreading premixed grout into the gaps, removing excess, and wiping the surface before the grout fully sets. Its instructions are not specific to a plastic-only substrate, so check the products’ directions for your materials.
