An origami spike ball is made by folding multiple paper units and joining them into a three-dimensional form. The name is used for more than one design: one tutorial calls a 30-unit Sonobe kusudama a “Spike Ball,” while a separate catalog lists a different 30-unit spiked icosahedron. The instructions, paper sizes and attributions below are tied to their specific models.
Which origami spike ball do you mean?
If you want the Sonobe-based ball shown in the video titled “Modular Origami / Sonobe 30units / Kusudama / Spike Ball,” use the pattern credited to designer Toshiaki Houjyou and tutorial creator Mica. Its description specifies thirty 7.5 cm × 7.5 cm sheets. Watch the Sonobe 30-unit spike-ball tutorial for the model-specific folding and assembly.
A different option is Michał Kosmulski’s Spiked Icosahedron (reversed SEU link method), cataloged as a 30-unit model using a Simple Edge Unit / Sonobe-like variant. It is not the same pattern as Houjyou’s ball, so do not assume their units or assembly instructions are interchangeable.
Materials and paper size
For Houjyou’s 30-unit spike ball, prepare thirty square sheets measuring 7.5 cm × 7.5 cm, as specified in the tutorial description. For learning a basic Sonobe module before choosing a larger structure, the general Modular Sonobe Unit Folding Instructions use 6 in × 6 in (15 cm × 15 cm) paper as an example. These are dimensions for different instructional purposes, not universal requirements for every spike-ball model.

Square origami paper is the directly supported material. The cited instructions do not name any special tool as necessary; no particular paper brand is required.
How Sonobe modules connect
A Sonobe unit is folded from a square and has triangular flaps and pockets. In the Riverbend Community Math Center’s assembly directions, the triangular flaps of one module tuck into pockets in another to form the structure. Riverbend’s Sonobe polyhedra directions demonstrate this interlock and give six modules for their cube example.

Keep the units’ handedness consistent
Riverbend cautions that left- and right-handed modules will not fit together. Make every unit with the same crease orientation and handedness, following the selected model’s directions. The cube example is not a substitute for a spike-ball assembly pattern: other Sonobe polyhedra may require different crease directions, and the generic module instructions do not establish the geometry of the 30-unit spike ball.

Riverbend says the Sonobe folding procedure was invented in the 1960s and is attributed to Mitsunobu Sonobe. That attribution is for the procedure, not necessarily every later configuration built from Sonobe-like units. The particular 30-unit spike-ball video separately credits Toshiaki Houjyou as designer and Mica as tutorial creator.
