Use winter downtime to get six practical projects ready for spring: make seed tape, fold newspaper pots, repurpose suitable containers, assemble a milk-jug winter-sowing greenhouse, prepare reusable plant markers, or organize a seed-starting tray or soil-block setup. Most help with indoor seed starting; the milk jug is the exception—it is assembled indoors, then placed outside to sow seeds for spring transplanting.
Choose a project for the job
| Project | What it helps with | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Paper seed tape | Spaces small seeds for planting | Outdoors, at sowing time |
| Newspaper pots | Holds individual indoor starts | Indoors |
| Recycled-container pots | Repurposes suitable containers for starts | Indoors |
| Milk-jug mini greenhouse | Starts seeds using winter sowing | Assembled indoors; used outdoors |
| Plant markers | Identifies plants and varieties | Wherever seeds or seedlings are grown |
| Tray or soil-block setup | Organizes pots or starts seeds in blocks | Indoors |
Before choosing, check seed packets for sowing month, depth, spacing, and conditions. Those instructions vary by plant; the Royal Horticultural Society’s indoor-sowing guidance advises checking packets for recommended indoor sowing months.
1. Make paper seed tape
Seed tape is a simple way to prepare small seeds for a later outdoor sowing. Missouri Extension describes it as a winter activity and specifies paper strips cut to 2 inches by 12 inches.

- Mark seed positions according to the spacing on the seed packet.
- Use a small amount of paste to attach a seed at each mark.
- Let the tape dry completely, then store it until planting.
- At sowing time, follow the packet for planting depth, spacing, and conditions. The University of Georgia Extension seed-tape instructions also advise checking the packet for appropriate depth.

2. Fold newspaper into seedling pots
A can or similar cylinder can help shape newspaper into small pots for indoor starts. Fill each pot with seed-starting mix, sow the seeds, and follow their packet for timing, depth, and growing conditions. UF/IFAS provides instructions for making newspaper seed-starter pots.
Plan to use these as containers for starting seeds; do not assume a paper pot will break down reliably under every growing or planting condition.

Some clean, reused food containers can serve as seed-starting containers. Choose only containers that can drain, and make sure they are clean before adding seed-starting mix. Not every food package is suitable for every seed or growing setup.
The RHS indoor-sowing advice identifies old food containers as an option, while Iowa State Extension’s container guidance covers seed-starting containers and alternatives.

Missouri Extension’s winter-sowing guide describes this method and gives native-flower examples including milkweed, black-eyed Susan, purple coneflower, liatris, lobelia, and penstemon. Check the instructions for the particular seeds you choose rather than treating those examples as a universal planting list.

5. Make reusable plant markers

Write the plant name and variety clearly on a dry surface with a marker suited to the material. See UC Cooperative Extension’s gardening activities.

6. Prepare a tray or soil-block setup
Set up a tray to keep small pots together, or explore soil blocks as a way to start seeds without individual pots. This can be a practical organization project rather than a reason to buy a single-use setup: handmade newspaper pots or suitable reused containers are alternatives. Iowa State Extension discusses purpose-made containers and soil blocks in its seed-starting container guidance.

Plan for light, timing, and growing conditions
- Timing: Seed sowing dates differ by plant and region. Check the packet and local extension recommendations.
- Light: A sunny winter windowsill may still not provide enough light for seedlings, a limitation noted in University of Georgia Extension seed-starting guidance.
- Drainage: Pots and repurposed containers need a way for excess water to drain.
- Method: Seed tape is for later outdoor planting; pots, trays, and blocks support indoor starts; prepared milk jugs are used outdoors for winter sowing.
Seed-starting mix is useful for pots and indoor starts. For supplies, start with the method you plan to use and the seed packet’s directions rather than assuming one container or growing approach suits every seed.
