For a lightweight, full-scale Slimer display, start by planning a carved prop-foam body, then build up the face and choose a finish for where the sculpture will be shown. The right construction depends on whether you want a rigid, static prop, a wearable costume, or a flexible puppet: those goals require different support, surface, and movement choices.
Choose the kind of Slimer you are building
Before buying material, decide what the finished piece needs to do. A static Halloween display can use a shaped, supported body with surface details added afterward. A wearable costume needs room for a person and a structure that can be carried; a puppet needs parts and skin that move without cracking or binding. A single foam recipe will not automatically serve all three.
- Static display: prioritize manageable weight, stable support, carved expression, and a finish suited to the display location.
- Wearable costume: account for the wearer’s space, visibility, ventilation, weight distribution, and movement before carving the outer shape.
- Flexible puppet: plan for movement and a flexible skin or construction. A rigid coating intended to protect a static sculpture may be unsuitable for moving joints.

ILM’s account of Ghostbusters II says the sequel’s Slimer design moved in a more playful, cartoonish direction and identifies Mark Siegel as a key contributor who resculpted the character. It also describes a very soft, flexible sculpture and foam latex applied over a body form—a production-history account, not a reproducible home-build specification. Read ILM’s retrospective.

Small toys can help you study expression and proportions, but they are not life-size templates. Hasbro describes its Squash & Squeeze Slimer as a 7-inch toy with over 40 sounds; LEGO’s Peter Venkman & Slimer set #41622 contains 228 pieces. Those figures describe merchandise, not Slimer’s canonical size or construction requirements. Hasbro product page · LEGO building instructions.
What foam should you use to sculpt a life-size Slimer?
For a static display, carvable prop foam is a sensible starting category because it is designed to be shaped into scenic and film forms. DUNA describes its CORAFOAM R-series as suitable for scenic, theming, and film carving, by hand or machine; its guidance says it is not for hot-wire carving. Check the directions for the exact product you buy before selecting tools. DUNA Prop Foam.

High-density polyurethane foam systems are another option for carving and sculpture. FSI describes systems in multiple densities and configurations, but a two-part foam is a product-specific choice: review its technical and safety sheets rather than assuming every polyurethane product expands, carves, or cures the same way. FSI rigid molding foam.

- Weight and support: consider how the finished body will stand or attach to a base, and whether the structure beneath it can carry the foam and finish.
- Detail: decide whether you want to carve features directly, attach separately sculpted pieces, or combine methods.
- Flexibility: a rigid carved body fits a static prop better than a piece that must bend or articulate.
- Finish durability: select a coating for the expected handling and display conditions, checking that it is compatible with your foam.
- Tools and workspace: match the material to tools you can use safely and to the product’s shaping instructions.
Plan the body, face, and finish in stages
- Sketch the silhouette and support. Draw Slimer from the front and side at your intended display height. Mark the broad body masses, the direction of the pose, and where a base or internal support may be needed. Use the drawing to estimate foam sections; it is a planning aid, not a verified pattern.
- Choose and test the foam. Confirm the exact product’s carving method, cure requirements, and safety directions. Make a small test cut and test any planned adhesive or coating on a scrap before committing to the sculpture.
- Block in the large shapes. Assemble or shape the main body first, keeping enough material for later refinement. Carve with the hand or machine tools permitted for that foam; do not assume a tool suitable for one product is suitable for another.
- Refine the expression. Work from the large facial forms to smaller details so the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and overall expression read together. Add separate details only after checking how they meet the body and how their materials will bond.
- Prepare a compatible surface. Smooth-On describes Epsilon Pro and UreCoat as coatings that can give carved or sculpted foam an impact-resistant finish. Reynolds Advanced Materials and Smooth-On also offer cosplay and prop material categories, including coatings and epoxy putty. These are optional product examples, not universal prescriptions: check compatibility, application, and cure directions for the specific foam and finish. Reynolds cosplay materials · Smooth-On cosplay materials.
- Paint after the surface is ready. Follow the coating maker’s instructions for when the surface can be painted. Choose the paint and sheen for the intended display; if the piece will be outdoors or handled, verify that the complete system is appropriate for those conditions rather than assuming a decorative paint layer provides protection.
What other Slimer builds show—and what they do not
In a November 2020 forum post, maker Jesse Spellen described a Halloween costume made with glued high-density foam, including reused yoga-block and step-block scraps, plus rubber, rotary-tool work for smaller details, epoxy plumbing putty teeth, and phosphorescent paint for glow. That is one maker’s account of a costume, not an independently tested recipe or a materials list for a full-size static sculpture. Read the maker’s post.
The film-production example and the fan costume illustrate why purpose matters: a soft, flexible skin process and a glued foam costume solve different problems from a rigid display sculpture. Borrow a technique only after checking that it suits your structure, movement needs, and chosen materials.

Work safely with foam, coatings, and tools
Read the safety data sheet (SDS) for the exact foam, adhesive, coating, and two-part product you use, and follow its technical directions for ventilation, protective equipment, curing, and cleanup. CalArts’ 2 Pop workshop guidance recommends allowing adhesives, coatings, and two-part foams to cure before machining, keeping dust and scraps under control, and handling knives and powered tools carefully.
