Make an eight-sided paper flying disk from eight folded squares: tuck each folded segment into the next to form a ring, then secure the joins with tape if needed. The steps below follow Make’s “Origami Flying Disk” project; a second version using one A4 sheet is also outlined.

What you need

  • Eight paper squares, each 2 inches by 2 inches, as specified by Make.
  • Clear tape, if needed to keep the assembled segments connected.
  • Scissors only if you are cutting squares from a larger sheet.

Make does not specify a required paper weight or brand. Use paper you can crease cleanly; the source does not establish that a particular type flies better. See Make’s Origami Flying Disk instructions.

Fold and assemble the disk

  1. Place one square in front of you. Fold its upper-right corner toward the lower-left corner.
  2. Fold the upper-left corner toward the lower-left corner to create a small triangular pocket.
  3. Repeat the same folds on the other seven squares.
  4. Slide the folded end of one segment into the pocket of another. Continue interlocking the segments until they form an eight-sided ring.
  5. Add tape where needed to secure the joins.

Make’s project shows this particular fold sequence. Famigros describes a related design with a different segment-fold description, so follow one set of instructions rather than combining folds from the two versions.

A second version using an A4 sheet

Famigros’ “Flying Disc” variation starts with one A4 sheet. Cut it into eight equal squares, fold each piece diagonally and fold in a tip to make a segment, then slide the segments together and tape the joins. The instructions also suggest folding each outer edge down by about 5 mm. Gift wrap is offered as an optional decorative paper choice.

Because the fold sequence differs from Make’s, use the illustrations in the Famigros Flying Disc instructions for that version.

Shape the rim and try a throw

Make recommends bending the disk’s outside edges downward to form a curved lip, then throwing with a quick wrist snap. Its project says the flat disk glides briefly and drops quickly, and proposes the curved edge as a way to improve flight. These are qualitative instructions, not measured results for this model; neither Make nor Famigros establishes a dependable flight distance or duration.

Try a gentle throw in an open area, keeping the disk level, and adjust the rim evenly rather than sharply creasing one section more than the others. Treat any change in flight as your own observation, not a guaranteed effect.

What to expect from this paper frisbee

The sources provide folding and throwing guidance, not a controlled comparison of paper types, edge shapes, or throwing techniques. They do not establish a best paper weight, brand, or reliable range. Alex’s Paper Airplanes also lists a separate design called “Paper Frisbee” and describes it as flying in circles; that is a different model, not a flight claim for this eight-segment ring.
