For a beginner learning the legacy Illustrator CS6 release, start with Adobe’s archived Illustrator CS6 Reference. It is a version-specific PDF whose contents cover core tasks from drawing and editing to text, color, effects, output, and keyboard shortcuts. Adobe’s current tutorial site can supplement it, but its instructions may describe a newer interface or features that CS6 does not have.
Start with the official Illustrator CS6 user guide
The archived Illustrator CS6 Reference is the strongest official, version-matched guide identified here. Use its table of contents to find the tool or task you need, then follow the corresponding instructions in CS6. It is a reference manual rather than a verified, project-based beginner course, so you may need to choose a small project and work through the relevant sections in sequence.
The manual covers drawing, selecting and editing objects and paths, effects, text, color, output, and keyboard shortcuts. Those topics are a useful map for learning the application without assuming that a current Illustrator tutorial uses the same controls.

A practical order for learning CS6
The following sequence is an editorially organized learning path based on the manual’s subjects, not a course order prescribed by Adobe. A simple icon or one-page flyer gives each stage a concrete result.
- Orient yourself to the workspace. Locate the tools, panels, document area, and controls you will use. Keep the CS6 manual open as a reference for its interface and terminology.
- Create and select vector objects. Make basic shapes, select them, and learn how selection affects the object you intend to change. For an icon, begin with a few simple geometric forms.
- Draw and edit paths. Practise creating and adjusting paths before adding detail. Use a small, uncomplicated shape so you can see how edits alter its outline.
- Apply fills, strokes, and color. Give your icon or flyer a fill and an outline, then adjust the colors. Learn the distinction between the interior fill and the stroke around an object.
- Add and format text. For a flyer, add a heading and a short line of supporting text. Check the CS6-specific manual for the relevant text controls.
- Organize and transform objects. Arrange elements and adjust their position or size to make a balanced composition. Keep related parts organized as the project grows.
- Save and export. Consult the manual’s output guidance for the task you need. Saving an editable document and preparing an output file serve different purposes; choose the appropriate format for how the artwork will be used.
What distinguishes Illustrator CS6?
Adobe’s CS6 manual identifies native 64-bit support and the Adobe Mercury Performance System among the release’s changes. It also lists workflow features such as pattern creation, gradient on a stroke, and Image Trace. These are features documented for CS6, not a complete list of what a current Illustrator release offers.
The manual says: “The Adobe Mercury Performance system is a combination of solutions that makes Illustrator faster, more responsive, and able to handle larger files.” It also describes 64-bit support as allowing Illustrator to use RAM beyond 3 GB. Both statements refer to the historical CS6 release; they should not be read as a performance guarantee for a present-day computer.
Use current Illustrator tutorials carefully
Adobe Illustrator Desktop Help provides current tutorials and help. Treat it as supplemental rather than a CS6 walkthrough: before following a lesson, check whether its screen, command names, and feature are present in CS6. When they differ, use the archived CS6 manual for version-specific instructions.

Are there CS6 beginner books?
A community response on Adobe’s feedback site points to a Classroom in a Book example for Illustrator CC 2018, not CS6. It supports the existence of project-oriented Illustrator training books as a category, but does not verify a CS6 edition or its current availability. If you are searching for print, use the phrase “Adobe Illustrator CS6 reference guide book” and confirm the exact edition before buying. No current CS6 book listing, price, or stock is established here; the archived PDF is the verified version-specific resource.

Adobe’s Creative Suite 6 system-requirements page is historical documentation covering multiple applications, and requirements vary by application and operating system. It includes period operating-system entries such as Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7, and Mac OS X 10.6.8 and 10.7 for relevant applications; do not treat these as Illustrator requirements without checking the Illustrator-specific entry.
Adobe’s page also says CS6 requires activation, broadband internet, and registration. The page was last updated September 9, 2024. These historical requirements do not establish that CS6 will install or activate successfully on a particular current or older computer, or that it receives current support or is secure on a present-day system.
