Choose a few fixed viewpoints, return to them throughout the year, and pair each wide garden photograph with close-ups and a dated note. That simple routine creates a useful record of seasonal changes—from first leaves and buds to flowers, fruit, autumn color, and leaf loss—without requiring special equipment or a formal monitoring schedule.

What to record as the garden changes

Phenology is the study of seasonal changes in plants and animals from year to year. In a garden, useful milestones include leaf emergence, bud formation, first flowers, full bloom, fruiting, leaf color change, and leaf loss. You can follow the whole garden, one bed, or a few plants that matter to you.

Decide what you want to notice before you begin. A record of flowering dates answers a different question from a series showing how a border fills out, or how a particular shrub responds to weather. You do not need to track every plant or event.

Choose repeatable photo points

Pick a small number of positions that show the whole garden or a particular bed. Stand in the same place for each return visit and, where practical, keep the framing similar. Permanent photo points are recommended by the University of Wisconsin Arboretum because repeated views make change easier to see.

At each visit, take a broad portrait for context and closer photographs of the details you want to follow, such as leaves, buds, flowers, or fruit. UBC Botanical Garden’s observation guidance uses a plant portrait, a flower close-up, and a photograph of the plant’s identification label. The label image is especially useful when you are submitting a formal observation and an identification label is available.

A phone or camera is enough to make a record. If you want help repeating a composition, a tripod or other stable support is optional; the sources do not establish that one is necessary or that any particular equipment performs better.

Add a dated note to each observation

A photograph shows what the plant looked like, but a short note helps explain when and under what conditions you saw it. Record the date, plant name or label, observed stage, and relevant weather. Cornell recommends noting dates and weather at milestones such as first leaf, first bud, first flower, full bloom, and die-off. NC State Extension recommends including the month, day, year, and time in journal entries, and suggests recording environmental information such as rainfall, temperature, humidity, cloud cover, frost, and storm damage.

You can keep notes in a garden journal or notebook, a digital log, or an observation platform. UBC Botanical Garden describes submitting observations through iNaturalist. Choose a format you can keep using and search later; no particular journal or app is established as best.

Set a schedule you can maintain

There is no universal observation frequency for a home garden. Choose a routine that fits your purpose, then visit more often when a change you care about is approaching. A weekly schedule is used in Cambridge University Botanic Garden’s phenology project, while the GLOBE protocol varies observation frequency with the plant’s stage. These are examples from structured monitoring, not requirements for home gardeners.

Review photographs across seasons and years

Compare the same plant or viewpoint, and include the date or seasonal stage and weather context in the comparison. Similar framing makes visual differences easier to spot; notes can help distinguish, for example, a late flowering date from a plant photographed at a different stage.

Historical photographs can offer another point of comparison. A single image can show what was visible on that occasion, but it cannot by itself establish why a plant changed. Your dated records provide context; they do not prove a cause.

How formal projects differ from a home record

Structured projects may monitor many plants on a defined schedule. Cambridge University Botanic Garden says its Phenology Project records seasonal changes in “around 90 trees and woody plants” in its collection to help understand the effects of climate change. The project says it observes three or more plants per species where possible. Those figures describe the institution’s monitored collection, not a target for a home garden.

For your own garden, a few consistently photographed plants can be more useful than an ambitious record that becomes hard to maintain. Keep the viewpoint and note-taking routine practical, and expand it only if you want to answer additional questions.
