There is no objective ranking of the best ocean paintings, and these works do not all use navy as their dominant color. Instead, they capture the sea’s majesty in distinct ways: Winslow Homer makes it dangerous and human, Martin Johnson Heade gives it a moonlit blue-gray glow, Georges Seurat turns it into a pattern of color, and Claude-Joseph Vernet contrasts calm water with storm. Choose by the mood and composition you want to live with—or compare several to see how differently artists make the ocean feel.
Which ocean painting best fits the mood you want?
| Your preference | Painting | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Turbulence and human vulnerability | Winslow Homer, The Gulf Stream | A figure adrift in dangerous, choppy water as a storm approaches. |
| Rugged coastal power | Winslow Homer, Maine Coast | A forceful view of rocky coast and churning ocean. |
| Moonlit blue-gray atmosphere | Martin Johnson Heade, Point Judith, Rhode Island | Silvery-blue water under glowing moonlight and swirling clouds. |
| Navy accents and stylized pattern | Georges Seurat, Seascape (Gravelines) | A dotted composition of blue, yellow, and green, with navy-blue dots in the border. |
| Serenity beside danger | Claude-Joseph Vernet, A Calm Sea and A Stormy Sea | A paired comparison of soft evening light with wind, rough waves, and shipwreck drama. |
Paintings for drama and the power of the coast
Winslow Homer, The Gulf Stream (1899; reworked by 1906)
Homer’s The Gulf Stream places a vulnerable figure adrift in choppy Caribbean waters while a storm gathers. The Met dates the oil painting to 1899 and notes that Homer reworked it by 1906. Its unsettled scene makes the ocean feel both immense and indifferent to human danger. View The Gulf Stream at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The title also points beyond the scene itself. In the Met’s audio guide, Northwestern University humanities professor Daniel Immerwahr describes the Gulf Stream as “a river within the ocean,” carrying Caribbean water up the U.S. East Coast and across the Atlantic toward Europe. That geography gives the painting a wider sense of connection between distant shores, even as its central image remains one of isolation.
Winslow Homer, Maine Coast (1896)
For a forceful coastal view, Homer’s Maine Coast focuses on rugged shoreline and churning water. The Met describes Homer’s expressive brushwork in this body of work as capturing “the power, eternity, and majesty of the ocean.” It records Maine Coast as an oil painting on canvas and provides a public-domain image. Winslow Homer, Early Morning After a Storm at Sea (1900–1903)
Homer’s title suggests a sea just beyond its most violent moment. The Cleveland Museum of Art records the work as an oil painting and quotes Homer calling it “the best picture of the sea that I have painted.” That is the artist’s own assessment, not an independent ranking, but it signals how strongly he valued this marine subject. See the Cleveland Museum of Art record.
Blue-gray light and navy detail
Martin Johnson Heade, Point Judith, Rhode Island (1867–68)
Heade offers a quieter, nocturnal alternative to Homer’s crashing water. The Cleveland Museum of Art describes a silvery-blue sea beneath glowing moonlight, with clouds swirling overhead. Look to this painting for atmospheric blue-gray color and the feeling of watching the coast after dark, rather than bright daylight surf. Georges Seurat, Seascape (Gravelines) (1890)
Seurat’s painting suits readers drawn to structure and surface rather than a naturalistic storm. A sandy dune and sea emerge through dots of blue, yellow, and green; the National Gallery of Art specifically notes navy-blue dots in the dark border. That navy detail is part of the framing, not evidence that the entire painting is predominantly navy. The work is oil on wood, and the Gallery’s page offers a print option. See the painting and print option at the National Gallery of Art.
A pair that sets calm against storm
Claude-Joseph Vernet, A Calm Sea and A Stormy Sea
Vernet made paired marine views that let you compare two states of the same subject. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum describes A Calm Sea through soft, misty evening light, while A Stormy Sea turns to choppy waves, wind, and shipwreck drama. Seen together, the paintings make changing weather—not just color or coastline—the organizing idea. Read the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum’s account of Vernet’s A Calm Sea.

Viewing originals and finding reproductions
The paintings discussed here are museum-held works, best approached as works to view rather than ordinary purchases. If you want a reproduction, the National Gallery of Art offers a print-purchasing option for Seurat’s Seascape (Gravelines). Its custom-print catalogue showed 17 ocean images when accessed; that is a changing catalogue snapshot, not a measure of popularity or market size. Check the NGA page for the current print option.
The Met marks Homer’s Maine Coast public domain and provides a downloadable image, but that does not establish that a particular commercial print is available. For any reproduction, check the actual seller, edition, size, framing, and rights before ordering. The image and catalogue terms can differ from a print seller’s product details.
