The Shitty Camera Challenge invites you to make and share photographs with a camera whose limitations force you to improvise. You do not need premium gear—or even a new camera: use one you already own, borrow one, or find an inexpensive option if you want to. The challenge is about experimenting with what a camera can do, not acquiring better equipment.
What is the Shitty Camera Challenge?
It is a community photography exercise built around an intentionally broad idea: take pictures with a camera that is cheap, old, awkward, low-capability, or otherwise considered “shitty” by participants, then share the results. The definition is subjective, and a particular round may narrow it with a theme or eligibility rules.
Founder Adam James says the idea came to him in March 2018 after he and his partner found two inexpensive point-and-shoot cameras at Goodwill. He launched the challenge account on April 12, 2018, and the first contest followed in June. James described the format as an alternative to conventional photography contests, where making and sharing images—not winning a prize—is the real reward. He wrote, “The overall goal of the contest was to get myself, and anyone else that wanted, out and about to making art through the medium of shitty cameras.” (EMULSIVE, Adam James)

The “Ansel Adams” in the title is an invitation to make art, not a claim that a particular camera will produce a particular look. The useful constraint is working with a camera’s quirks instead of treating them as a reason to wait for better gear.
How do I join the #ShittyCameraChallenge?
Follow the challenge account’s current announcement and use its active theme and eligibility details. A participant post from June 2026, quoting a community announcement, described the steps as using a qualifying camera, posting photographs, and tagging the challenge account. It named the round theme “Shitty Cameras” and included a camera-selection chart; that is an example from that date, not a standing schedule or permanent rule. (CJ’s Wunderkammer, June 29, 2026)

- Check the active round. Read the challenge account’s latest announcement for its theme, dates, camera criteria, and posting instructions.
- Choose a camera that fits. Start with a camera you own or can borrow; do not buy anything until you know what the round accepts.
- Make photographs within the round’s window, if one is set. Past formats have included themed rounds and set periods for shooting and sharing, as well as open-ended community participation.
- Post and tag as instructed. Use the account tag and any other details specified in the current announcement so the community can find your work.
What makes a camera “shitty”?
There is no single technical threshold established across all rounds. The term can refer to a camera’s low cost, age, limited controls, unusual format, unreliable results, or the extra effort needed to use it. The key is whether the camera fits the active round and gives you something to work around.
Past examples span disposable and focus-free cameras, cheap plastic models, instant cameras, obsolete formats, and less-capable digital cameras. A 2022 “Instant Regret” round included new Instax cameras, vintage Polaroids, instant backs, and adapted setups. That range shows why a specific camera type should not be assumed to qualify every time: check the theme. (Analog Forever Magazine, October 9, 2022)

Which camera should you use?
Choose by the kind of limitation you want to work with and the effort you are willing to take on. Film and instant formats bring a different workflow from digital; film also means accounting for film and processing. A modified camera can be an appealing project, but it requires extra parts or skills. The examples below are options, not eligibility guarantees or current price recommendations.

If you want the simplest purchase option, a disposable film camera is one natural fit, but it is only one route. You can also consider a used compact digital camera, a toy camera, or an instant camera if it suits the round. Prices, availability, condition, film compatibility, and local processing options vary; the documented sources do not establish current costs or stock.

Can you modify or build a camera for the challenge?
Yes, if you enjoy making things and the camera meets the active round’s rules. Hackaday describes projects such as adapting film cartridges for obsolete formats, making 3D-printed adapters, building a simple pinhole camera, and experimenting with Raspberry Pi or ESP camera modules. These ideas can create interesting constraints, but they involve extra materials and technical work; none is required to participate. (Hackaday, December 30, 2024)
What is the point if the camera is limited?
A limitation gives you a reason to adapt: compose around a fixed lens, work with imperfect focus, make the most of a small number of exposures, or accept a camera’s distinctive results. The challenge shifts attention from equipment acquisition to noticing, experimenting, and making pictures.

Pick a camera you can use, find out what the current round asks for, and make a few photographs before deciding whether you need anything else. The challenge works as an invitation to create with what is at hand.
